Perkins police arrested a 47-year-old Vermilion man for drunken driving after he allegedly ran a red light, smashed into a car carrying a small child and then fled the scene.

Dexter Sullivan, 6400 block of W. Lake Road, is charged with OVI, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, running a red light and leaving the scene of an accident.

A Sandusky police report filed by Officer Lester Peters said Sullivan was traveling east on Monroe Street in a black 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche at 4:44 p.m. Saturday, when he went through a red light, hitting a 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer driven by Devon Woodruff, 22, 500 block of Hancock Street. Her child was in a child seat in her car’s backseat.

Woodruff told police she pulled over and Sullivan stopped behind her. When she tried to call the police, however, Sullivan fled.

Woodruff followed Sullivan’s car into Perkins Township but lost sight of it near Target. She returned to speak to Peters about the accident.

In the meantime, a Perkins police dispatcher asked officers to look for the Avalanche traveling south on Milan Road. Perkins police Officer Brent Adams spotted Sullivan’s car and pulled it over. A can of “hard” iced tea was found in the vehicle.

Sullivan claimed to be on the way home from Monroeville before admitting his role in the Sandusky crash, Peters’ report said. Sullivan’s speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and he smelled of alcohol, the report said. Sullivan refused to take a field sobriety test and was arrested.

Sullivan’s car was towed away. At the Perkins police station, Sullivan scored 0.225 on a blood alcohol test. He was issued paperwork and released to a sober person, the report said.

That's not karma. It's good police work.

Holy Moly! He blew a .225?
That sounds like "almost dead" to me.
He's very lucky he didn't kill anyone.
