The Perkins school board is expected to approve more district-wide cuts at a special meeting tonight to cope with a lack of funding from its failed May levy.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. in the Perkins High School cafeteria. It follows a May 16 closed-door meeting where board members discussed the district’s finances and personnel issues.

Tonight board members plan to discuss the closed-door meeting’s topics with the public and most likely take action, board president Matt Kosior previously said.

“We need to review where exactly we are as we head into the next levy effort,” Kosior said at a May 8 meeting, shortly after board members agreed to place a 10-year, 6.73-mill levy on the August ballot.

Voters overwhelmingly rejected a 4.98-mill levy proposal May 7, killing the district’s hopes of avoiding deficit spending without additional cuts.

Even after approving $12 million in cuts in April for the next four years, the district is still projecting a deficit of about $1 million for the upcoming school year, treasurer Lisa Crescimano said.

The district’s budget is about $23 million.

A copy of tonight’s meeting agenda was not available Tuesday. The agenda should be available on the district’s website by about 2 p.m. today, Crescimano said.

character counts

Let me just start off by saying that I am extremely disappointed and disgusted with the lack of character, moral, and knowledge that is posted in this trashy blog. What sickens me even more is that my child is born in one of the most SELFISH eras that had ever existed. Every single person that is absorbed with this issue is downright self centered. I too am disgusted with way that the administration has bullied an affluent community into making these decisions. I agree with each and every one of you that wants your voice to be heard. Everyone is entitled to their own vote, and opinion. I am angry with the board, I am angry with Gunner, and I am also angry with each citizen that bases a critical vote without using any type of logic. Let's think about this entire issue. Having a business background, if Gunner makes additional cuts it will directly impact the children in this community, and because a union is based on seniority he will be cutting young employees that are lowest on the pay scale. Now let's think about how an economy is run. For those of you who may have not payed attention during Econ, your largest consumers in life are younger people. Think about it, young people are building their lives, making purchases, buying houses...hello!!!! Therefore, your no vote is NOT affecting Gunner. He will continue to br employed, and make the same salary. You are destroying our present economy, and our FUTURE! Oh yea and all you bright individuals that want the state to step in take a look at our present economic situation. Your willing to take a local affair and give it to the state. If you haven't already learned that less government involvement is better, than you fools need to take a good look around at society. Who in their right mind would want the state to be more involved in civil matters. You think you voice isn't heard now, well it really won't matter if government is involved. So take your no vote, your voice, and all your power to the November election, and get rid of the three board members that are up for re-election. And for the record research topics before you get on a public blog and have NO idea what you talk about!

Wow, character counts, you really showed your character! All your name calling and accusations really make me want to vote yes now...not! Typical bullying tactics of your BOE! Vote NO!

character counts

Exactly a typical comment that I would expect as a response. Absolutely not factual, or logical. As for the " MY BOE" go back and read the last sentence in my post. Obviously we share the same view. A better solution to fixing a broken community is to get rid of the current board because they are the ones that have a final say. Vote yes for the levey. Re-elect a new board in NOV!

What wasn't factual? You did insult people who vote no and tried to use threats to make no voters vote yes. Thank you for trying to tell me what is best for me (typical levy supporter arrogance), but I know the facts a lot better than you do, and I'm voting NO. Your ranting and name-calling will do nothing to change that.

Threat? I failed to read any threats

No threats? Maybe you lack comprehension: "if Gunner makes additional cuts it will directly impact the children in this community", "You are destroying our present economy, and our FUTURE!", "Your (sic) willing to take a local affair and give it to the state", "You think you voice isn't heard now, well it really won't matter if government is involved". Those sure read like threats to me.

CC, how is your comment any better? "Yes they're crooks, but give them more money because it's FOR THE CHILDREN." That's what's known as an EMOTIONAL appeal.

The kids will not be hurt. They will continue to learn and achieve as they have been because THEY AND THEIR PARENTS are the independent variable in that achievement. You want facts? There is ZERO correlation between school spending and student outcomes. Perkins spends more per pupil than many districts whose students are doing great.

There are three prerequisites for any intelligent person to vote yes - the replacement of at least the 3 board members up for re-election with people not endorsed by the remaining incumbents, Gunner's replacement by that new board, and a reversal of the millage switch. Of course, with that third one, the need for the levy is eliminated, so there's no logical basis for any yes vote.

God Of Thunder

No kidding... One of the longest winded comments I've read on here in a long time...
I fell asleep halfway through it..

Character Counts solution is to throw more money at the problem. Spoken like a true politician. VOTE NO!

*edit* Also kind of sounds like a realtor.

Voting NO in August and again in November!

Voting no in August again! Cut Gunner's salary!

Are you telling me as long as the current Super is there you will not even consider a YES vote.

You are correct. The lies and inside millage move after the voters said no not once but twice are it for me.

That's what I'm telling you.

Pirate Mama

I will vote Yes and with PRIDE! I proudly support this levy, the administration and the staff!

You and all the other 20% of the Township.

I will vote NO with PRIDE! I proudly support the hardworking tax payers of this district.

If you support the staff, why don't you ask your boss to move inside millage back where it belongs. That would save a lot of jobs. Or are facilities more important?

Vote yes out of pride not need is like Lemmings following each other over a cliff. Gunner needs to go on a financial diet. Better yet boot him.

Now we are getting through. See in America most in "authority" have always had their say and agenda . They too must bear the results of an economy that has hurt the MAJORITY of the populace.

I too will be voting NO and will not consider a yes vote as long as Gunner and the current board are in place. Remove them all and you have a yes from me.

Common Sense

If that is your logic for voting no, then you are applying your no vote to the wrong election. November is the time to do the work you suggest.

also will be voting no as long they are all still in charge, trying to force the voters into getting what they want, NOT what the voters want.

Pirate Mama

I do not want the state to take over our schools. I do not want my property value to continue to decrease, and I want to be proud of where I live and raise my family! I will vote YES!!!

I'll take the State running our district over what we have now.

They aren't even at that point yet. They want you to think so. Regardless, there is no real "takeover". A new school board is formed temporarily, and the school will continue to operate by "borrowing ahead" until a new levy is passed. Their 5 year forecast will eventually have to be in the black by making cuts or passing a levy. I also welcome the state coming in. Maybe inside millage will be moved back, and the plans to build a new school will be thrown out with yesterday's garbage.....along with Gunner.

I'm not moving so DECREASE my property value! No brainer! Less taxes and more money in my pocket! VOTE NO!

Lies, lies, lies....if you listen to Gunner's video, he's looking for a levy slogan like the Perkins Police. He said if the levy doesn't pass in August, there will be NO PERKINS SCHOOLS.

Nothing but lies people!
