According to the Sandusky Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol...
Patrol OVI Checkpoint on SR 4 in Perkins Township
Sandusky - The Ohio State Highway Patrol, in conjunction with Perkins Township Police Department and the Erie County Sheriff’s Department, announced today that an OVI checkpoint will be held from 10:00 P.M. to 01:00 A.M. tonight on SR 4 in Perkins Township, Erie County.
The OVI checkpoint, funded by federal grant funds, is planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers.
The checkpoint will also be held in conjunction with nearby saturation patrols to aggressively combat alcohol-related injury and fatal crashes.
If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don't let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired.

Why don't they do this during bike week?

Man power and talk about a cluster fuk

Why do at all, waste of tax

Tailgating causes more accidents and highway deaths than anything else, including drunk driving.
Whens the last time you've seen someone pulled over for tailgating or cutting people off when changing lanes? I've never heard of it.

I wish the Register would research and find out how many the Patrol has stopped for either of the crimes I've mentioned.

From the Grave

Those dudes that had all that weed got pulled over for following too closely! Idiots!

THEY SAY THAT "the location will be announced the morning of the checkpoint".(IN OTHER WORDS MAKE SURE YOU USE A ALTERNATE ROUTE.)

I don't understand why they "announce" it at all! Why give drunk drivers a warning? (and yes, I've had several DUIs myself)

Maybe you missed out on a quality education.

By law they have to announce it! Stupid I know but someone sued and this is the out come. They even would tell us back in high school that the dogs would be in the next day and still ppl would get caught!

It is completely wrong and immoral to announce these checkpoints.
Some impaired drivers will avoid getting put in their place place by seeing these announcements. Impaired drivers need to caught and by "impaired drivers" you know I mean you alcoholics!
Who else do you see driving down the wrong side of the road besides drunks and the elderly?

Did you ever consider that the impaired driver may not be remembering where the check point is?

but this is completely required by the courts and(supreme court)to avoid entrapment, search and seizure, 4th amendment right/laws etc. Plus it raises awareness of the risks of OVI. Specifically, the case of Michigan State Police v. Sitz - 496 U.S. 444 (1990)changed all of this but basically ruled that drunk drivers outweigh the small infringement the brief encounter is to the motorist. Guess you can thank the sue happy society we live in for that.

my, my, my! aren;t we way up the goodie-2-shoe list

Arrest the drunks.
Check them as they leave the bars and restaurants.
Breathylize them at the liquor store.
Alcohol is a really really bad drug.
Probably the worst.
Triple the taxes on alcohol now!

Or go to all the Church's and put video in the priest rooms to stop them from molesting kids! I'm afraid of bible thumpers way before a drunk js

Today I learned that if each of the US states were a separate country, the 37 countries with the highest incarceration rates would all be US states.

Stop It

Repeat that in different words so it makes sense, please?

He is saying the US has the highest incarceration rate on the planet yet in the post before that he wants tougher laws on alcohol.
Just another misguided liberal who does not understand the meaning of "Liberty"

Stop It

DUI checkpoints are illegal search and seizure.

Edit to add: I can't wait for his death threats that got him banned before.

Better not tell us that would be like holding up a sign saying that a checkpoint is ahead.

Save a life. Stay home and get drunk.

getit right be4...

Assert your right at any and all checkpoint.

Film or at least audio record any and all interaction.

Take the time to educate yourself of your rights and assert them.

In my opinion poor driving skills and lac of knowledge of traffic laws hurt and kill more people every day than drunk drivers.

Last I checked there are 50 States in the United Countries of America. Not 37, and yes the original intent for the constitution was each state was a separate county. They formed a union for the purpose of common goals. Unfortunately this union of states has become a death-pact, thanks to ole dishonest Abe. Yes he freed the slaves, but only when he realized he was losing the war. Secede or Die! The framers are rolling in thier graves.

pigeon farmer

They should do them all day long on election day to keep the non-christian conservatives from voting. Setting up outside of any political meeting would be nice too.

sounds like you all are prejudiced against drunks. I think that is called being a bigot.

I am not prejudiced against drunks, I drink, I get drunk. I DO NOT drive my car after getting drunk. I either have someone else driving, am at home, or walking distance to my house (we drink with the neighbors). So there, I am not a bigot.

FYI it is illegal to walk in public drunk....its called voluntary public intoxication....have fun!

Most officers would rather you walked home than drive. If I am at the neighbors I am walking across our backyard or walking a half a block. If you are not belligerent, rude or obnoxious when talking to them, they will usually leave you alone, heck sometimes give you a ride. (I do NOT live in Sandusky). And yes I know it is illegal to be drunk in public. But we do have fun.

JudgeMeNot's picture

Lookingdown is wrong.

Read: 2917.11 Disorderly conduct.

Uummm no I'm not disorderly is when you are causing a problem sober or drunk. Voluntary intoxication is what we charge you when you are the drunk passanager in a DUI case or just for your own safety. I know just cause you Google the orc doesn't mean you know the use for it!

I do this for a living! Please don't tell me how to do my job!

Most people drink.....get over it....if u gonna drive, don't kill my family member or I will sue you for all your food stamps....LoLOLOL.....50% of people have no insurance u worthless fuc*s

Most ppl with no insurance don't have anything to sue for either so that's all you get...food stamps

Stop It

What does LoLOLOL mean?

"The OVI checkpoint, funded by federal grant funds..."

So the federal government thinks it is so important to find drunks in Sandusky, OH that it is borrowing money from China to fund the Sandusky checkpoint? What is our national government thinking?

Kobayashi Maru

Any guesses as to the exact location? I'll take Ohio 4 and Straub Road.

Stop It

Rt. 250 and Strub, where it ALWAYS is.

Stop It

You picked it, KM.

It's one thing to announce you're having one, but then to actually tell people WHERE??? If you get caught in one if these not only ahold you not have a drivers license, I'm not so sure you should be allowed to run around free...what a waste, I'm guessing what ever authority made it a law for LE to have to say WHERE it's gonna be, has been stopped before

Ahh, the 4th of July, That time of year when Americans celebrate their independence from a overbearing dictatorship and their freedoms by having their government flex their police state muscle by harassing the citizens.

Stop It

Truth or Dare

Make that 2 things! My guess is since it's ECS, OSHP and Perkins, it'll be somewhere closer to the intersection of Rte. 4 (Hayes Ave.) and Perkins. Maybe right by Delphi? It's 4 lanes, and it will need to be conducted in a safe manner. It's not too safe to do that on a 2 lane, north/south bound road, ditches on both sides, at night, on a Saturday and especially when C.P. traffic is heading home.

Seems strange to me that the checkpoint would end at 1:00am with so many of the bars remaining open until 2:30am. It seems as though there would be a larger target audience available for scrutiny closer to the 2:30 closing. I imagine they'll conclude the checkpoint with amazing statistics and lives saved, nonetheless.

Why don't they set up "walking checkpoints" on Monroe, Hayes, Hancock, Camp, McCarthur Park, Meigs & downtown at 3am? They'd have a field day & find tons of narcotics.
