(UPDATED WITH VIDEO 2:50 p.m.) Kevin Randleman pleaded guilty to aggravated murder Friday morning at a hearing in Erie County Common Pleas Court.

Friday was to be the start of the second day of the Atkins hearing to determine Randleman's mental capacity, but in a surprise move, Randleman pleaded guilty to the murder of Sandusky police officer Andrew Dunn on March 19, 2011. Randleman also pleaded guilty to having a weapon under disability and carrying a concealed weapon.

Judge Tygh Tone sentenced Randleman to life without parole.

By pleading guilty, Randleman gives up many of his rights to appeal his conviction in the case. He will have 30 days to appeal the sentence, but defense attorneys say the do not intend to file any such appeal.

According to the defense attorneys, the guilty plea was made this morning after the state accepted plea terms offered by the defense.

Family and friends of Dunn were in the courtroom and reacted emotionally to the plea Friday morning.

@ Julie R.... That is Ofcr Ken Gauchy (unsure of spelling) he was first officer on seen the night Andy left this world. They were good friends

To the Dunn family, we love you and we are so happy you do not have to be put through the hell of the trial! Justice has been somewhat served. R.I.P Andy. 2083 GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN... EVER

Finally this is over. Now the people of sandusky can let his wife and mother get on with their lives.

IDK... but I don't believe that any of the evidence can be suppressed now, can it? It is all public record, and can/should be released if requested.  There are many families in this country that would like to have records sealed....But, that does not take precedence over our rights by law....  JMO..

asweetnessabove

No the video should be sealed. A lot of records get sealed in certain cases. And I think this is one of those cases. And I'm pretty dang sure it is sealed.

KnuckleDragger

No need to release the video, I will give you a short summary of what you will see in the video from FRMC security cameras.  You will see Ofc Dunn stopping Randleman.  You will see Ofc Dunn going back to his car and then Randleman drawing his gun and shooting at Ofc. Dunn, as Dunn is retreating he returns fire and hits Randleman with a shot.  Ofc Dunn goes down and Randleman goes up to him grabs his shirt and ballistic vest, places his gun underneath and fires several shots into Officer Dunn.  If for a minute anyone thinks that particular move by Randleman doesn't show he knew what he was doing, you are nuts!!!  He was advised to plead guilty because that evidence was damning and the Atkins trial was really not going his way.  The defense knew that a classification of Mildly Mentally Handicapped wouldn't be enough because there is precidence for putting people in that classification to death.  His best option was to plead out for a life sentence.

@KnuckleDragger...I could have lived the rest of my life not knowing those details; that is even more depraved than I could have ever imagined. Andy was such a good guy. RIP Andy...and God Bless the Dunn family for having the strength to let this loser off. with a life sentence so they could move past this tragedy  My heart goes out to all of you.

Ahh yes, leave it to Brutus the fruitcake to make this about politics.  Brutus go take your meds, you are losing it again.

Swamp Fox

Only the lowest of the low would try to make this tragedy  political, but then again it is brutie or big dog what ever he calls himself when he slithers from under the rock.  Hopefully the family can find peace while they cherish and honor the memory of their husband, son and father.

vcreed123

Comical to hear all the blacks say it was not his fault and he shouldn't have got what he got, I love how it's always someone else's fault.

Tired Of The Bull

SMH at some of these comments.....So sad!!!!!!

I don't think it was any surprise to anyone, and certainly not the Dunn family, that as soon as the death penalty was removed, this man pled guilty.

That is all the defense was waiting for.  Randleman didn't want to die and the prosecutors didn't want to take it off the table until then. With a legitmate reason to do so, they could do it.  The defense could now ask for life without parole and get it and they did.

Case closed.  There is no reason to release anything....tapes, video, or anything else other than the public's morbid curoisty to see such things.  The man pled guilty.....case closed.

I can't picture any further need to release anything, can any of you.  Both Julie and I said that this would happen and it did.  He would plead and he did and got what he wanted.

Anything further will not happen.

You might want to take Matt Westerhold's class at BGSU in the fall where he will be disucssing the aftermath of the Randleman trial.  I just got a flyer about it.  Check with BG about it.

Kelly

So what happened to his girlfriend & all his cronies claiming  he was an innocent victim?

nomorebull

God bless Andy, his family and the rest of the officers involved in this horrific situation!

JIMBO2

Best possible outcome. Now the family doesn't have to sit through watching the videos over and over while a defense attorney trys to make a jury believe it was officer Dunn's fault he got killed. All that is left is Erie County Law officers reach out to any contacts they have in the penal system to see he is "warmly" welcomed to his new lifetime home during the intake process. He will be a hero among the inmates for being a sleazeball. P.O.S. cop killer. His standing among the guards will be much lower during his stay.

Super Judge

im happy that he is never going to see one second of freedom again. we deserve to have the option to see the video though.

No surprise.  The taxpayers have supported him- his  whole miserable  life,  what's 20 more?

I guess I am glad it is over. Saved Erie County hungreds of thousands of $$$ in a court trial. He has already cost huge amount in feeding/housing him and all these legal actions etc.  Yea, we have got to keep him till the day he draws his last breath but that is what we have been doing since he was born. He has been on some form of public welfare from the day he was born..........had all the special teachers at school etc. He has cost a bundle in $$$ since he was born. Nor sure what GOD had in mind by putting this guy on earth but guess it not mine to question.

I think when given the opportunity he never gave an apology to the Dunn family. That tells me he is not sorry and given the chance he would do it all over again. So I do hope the Dunn family knows that this entire community has shed its tears for them and we wish them some possibility of getting back to a more normal life. The absence of Officer Dunn will never be forgotten but maybe the pain will be less knowing the community cares.

I'd like to direct my comments to the 2 individuals that made comments on the front of the actual paper - Tract Taylor and Alahn Russell.  You both say that My. Randleman is innocent and wasn't out to cause any trouble and that Andy was the one to blame (basically) by pulling him over that night.  So if I'm interpretting your comments correctly if I would go speeding in my car thru town in the middle of the night, running red lights and the police pulled me over it would be okay with you to shoot them and kill them with my illegal gun because the police were harassing me and after all I wasn't doing anything wrong and I wasn't causing any trouble right???

Plain and simple, your boy was in the wrong!!!  If you were truly his friend you should have been helping him and making sure that he wasn't breaking the law after the FIRST time he killed a man!  This isn't the first time he has been in trouble since 99 either though so I I guess all those other time he was innocent too and just being harassed by police and he was really not trying to start any trouble then too right? But guess what it'll be the last - well at least on the street!  Behind bars he can get into as much trouble as he wants to and it won't matter.  He's not going to hurt anyone but himself!

RIP Andy!  And now maybe his family and LEO brothers and sisters can begin to really heal!

Taxed Enough Already

wiredmama22,  whether he wants to die or not, he's gonna.  We all do, now he just doesn't know how he will die.   His life amongst other murderers could be more horrible than lethal injection.  He and his family don't know who or what will kill him and I guarantee it will be a LOT more painful than the way he would have died.  So maybe he really is going to get HIS justice.  Stay tuned........

I 'am glad it is all over for the Dunn Family , I still cant believe that some people say if the Police did not pull Randleman over this would of never happened , that is true. But he was a Police Officer and has the right to pull any over at any time. And what was Randleman doing carrying a weapon any way. Even if Officer Dunn had his weapon drawn out first , if he did or not that I dont know , but if he did what did Randleman think oh my God !!! I better shoot him before he shoots me . HE IS AND WAS A STONE COLD KILLER THAT NIGHT !!!   I often wonder if it would of been a Black Police Officer that this happened to with the exact same situation , how the public would be reacting ?  I never heard any complaints when many years ago a man by the name of Jim McBee was beat to death by a group of young blacks on Hancock St. Yes he was intoxicated from what I heard and may have yelled some profranity to the group of young men , I'am not saying that he was right for what he said , but he was intoxicated , and instead of the young men just saying  forget about it he has had a little to much to drink , no they decieded to beat him to death . If I outlashed at every one who ever offened me I most likley would of been in jail a long time ago , I hope the public can see that justice has been served ,and I will be Praying for both families , The Dunn Family & The  Randleman , GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU.

Kelly

I think the public would be reacting exactly the same. Randleman's friends would just have to come up with a different excuse

Hoss McGee

I guess everytime I get pulled over now I'm just going to say (duh I'm retarded didn't know I was doing anything wrong)! Sad thing about it I know mentally challenged people and they have more common sense then this jack a$$! Guess no more KFC for Douchey Randleman.

Actually, I spoke to someone shortly after this happened, who told me that they had seen the dashcam video.

3 shots into the chest, then Cackle rolled him over, put his foot onto his neck, and executed him with one shot in the back.  Or maybe one shot into the back, then 3 to the chest.  Don't remember for sure - it was many months ago.

Regardless, this man is not mentally handicapped at all.  He may not have be very intelligent, but her certainly has enough of his faculties to know right from wrong.  He knew exactly what he was doing that night.

That's why there was no trial - if the video would have come out, everyone would know that bigotry or racism was not a factor here.  Reverse bigotry, maybe.
