About four weeks ago, Rodney Pfahler walked into Harbor Bait and Tackle, also known as Harbor Drive-Thru, at 910 Main St., for a pack of gum. He was a regular customer.
“Two weeks later, I bought the business” Pfahler said.
•WHERE: 910 Main St., Huron
•HOURS: 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Summer hours are expanded.
The clerk said she didn’t know, but she’d pass along the message. Pfahler forgot about the conversation. Two days later, the phone rang. It was Burre, offering to sell him the business. “Now I’m a convenience store owner,” Pfahler said. “He was ready to go fishing”
Burre isn’t entirely ready to live only a life of leisure. He plans to continue working at the shop through the summer to help Pfahler.
Huron Drive-Thru opened two weeks ago. Pfahler now co-owns it with his wife, Vickie.
The signs outside the business still read Harbor Drive-Thru, although new signs are on order.
What won’t change is the fully-stocked tackle section, which continues to provide area anglers with fishing tackle, accessories, boating needs, fishing licenses and bait.
“We do have shiners,” Pfahler said. “Usually when everyone else is out of shiners, we have them”
Pfahler said he enjoys talking to all his customers, but the fisherman are of particular interest to him.
“You’d be surprised all the things you get to learn,” he said. “The fisherman will tell you what is working and what isn’t. We are a little hub of information for fishermen”
The couple installed new beer coolers, and they’ll offer an expanded selection of beer, including a full selection of domestic, imported and craft brews. They also carry a wide offering of wine in the wine cave. They sell sandwiches, snacks, soft drinks and ice.
