A new neighborhood market serves the far west side of Sandusky. Alpesh and Hetal Ray opened Sandusky Food & Wine in October in the building across from Margaritaville that once housed a gas station.
“Sandusky has been good to us,” Alpesh Ray said. “We are getting more customers than we expected” The store is there to meet the needs of the local residents, he said. It carries the essential foods like milk, bread and eggs as well as beer, wine and snacks. Premade sandwiches are available for those on the go, he said. The store also has bait for fishermen and sells lottery tickets.

•WHERE: 303 Fremont Ave.
•WINTER HOURS: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Expanded hours in summer.
The Rays also will be selling money orders in the future, and it’s possible the family might reopen a gas station sometime in the future as well. Sandusky Food & Wine opened too late in the year to take advantage of last summer’s tourist season.
Renovations and remodeling of the building, including new floors and counters, delayed the grand opening. It also took four months for the store to get its liquor license approval. But the Rays are ready to handle the increased traffic come May, when tourist season starts up, with tourists exiting Ohio 2 at U.S. 6 en route to Cedar Point and other attractions. “I hope I do good” Ray said.
The couple, with the help of family and a parttime employee, make sure everything stocked in the store is fresh. They keep a clean market and try to offer the best service to everyone who walks in. “Come in and see us” he said.
