Not everyone is a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to home renovations and additions.

And while he appreciates everyone who’s looking to hire a flooring guru, Matt Kaman especially likes those folks who value a skilled craftsman with a great product.

“We guarantee all labor,” said Kaman, owner of Discount Flooring & Design, which recently left its old spot at Perkins Plaza in favor of a new location at 220 W. Perkins Ave.

“This is a larger space,” Kaman said. “We will have more in-stock carpet remnants.”

With a larger space and a greater variety of products, Kaman is aiming to lure those homeowners who are expanding or renovating their homes.

As newer types of wood flooring continue to grow in popularity, Discount Flooring offers several varieties.

The store also carries alternatives such as vinyl planks, which offer the appearance of wood but at a cheaper price. The vinyl planks are also more durable, Kaman said.

Kaman, who has been in the flooring business for 27 years, said he’ll best any prices offered by big box retailers or DIY stores.

“I guarantee the lowest prices,” he said, pointing out that he’s now offering a 50 percent discount on carpet remnants.

Discount Flooring’s crews can install most orders within a few weeks. The company has four installation crews for carpeting, as well as a few crews to tackle hard-surface jobs.

Kaman said he has much control over the quality of installations, as his crews are direct employees of Discount Flooring. Many other companies use subcontractors, he said.

Wendy Knupke, meanwhile, accounts for the design aspect of Discount Flooring & Design, helping customers settle on the product that best suits their tastes.

She is the store’s interior designer, as well as the office manager.

When customers don’t know what they want, Knupke is the one they turn to.

“They’ll say, ‘I wouldn’t have thought of that,’” Knupke said.

Kaman plans to open a second shop in Port Clinton, possibly on Ohio 269, in spring 2014.
