“People like unique pieces, not something you can find in anyone’s house,” said Kayleen Lee, who in September opened Upcycled, An Eclectic Boutique at the Main Street location.
Discarded or forgotten items are give a second life at Upcycled, where windows are wall hangings and shutters are shelves.
Hence the name.
“‘Upcycled’ means not throwing things away, trying to salvage pieces instead of throwing it away or hiding it in a basement,” Lee said.
Lee, who runs the shop with the help of her daughter, Lisa Goodright, said they’ve never had problems finding inventory. They hunt auctions and sales for many items, although some pieces are new.
Frustrated at driving an hour or more to find furniture and unique items, Lee began thinking long ago about opening her own shop. A few things happened to make her plans a reality.
Her hours were cut at her regular job, working as a secretary for the Norwalk school board, and the storefront next to Mossman Music later opened up
Lee pounced on the opportunity.
Just months into her endeavor, she has already regulars.
“They cannot believe how different it looks every time they come in,” Lee said.
Customers can shop without fear of breaking the bank.
“People come in because they can afford to re-do a room here,” Lee said. “We are very reasonable.”
That makes first-time apartment dwellers — or their parents — happy indeed, she said.
