VIDEO: 'Anonymous' gets involved

Video message from Internet group aims to take Limberios protest viral on Twitter with #OpJusticeForJake

Amidst the emotional turmoil of Jacob Limberios' second exhumation, Twitter users claiming to be part of the Internet group Anonymous have initiated a social media onslaught, demanding truth and justice.

Less than 24 hours before the Wednesday unearthing, a YouTube video surfaced featuring the group's trademark persona: the lead character from the movie "V For Vendetta" speaking with a computer-enhanced voiceover.

"We are Anonymous. We have come together to demand the truth," the voice states. "We shall find justice."

The voiceover script goes on to warn officials involved in "massive public corruption" that "there will be consequences for your actions."

A 2 p.m. tweet from popular Twitter user @Anon_WV dubbed the movement #OpJusticeForJake. On Twitter, hashtags are a way to categorize messages and indicate popular search phrases in a tweet.

Many other Twitter users, some claiming to be part of Anonymous, repeated the message in hundreds of separate tweets, likely in an attempt to attract nationwide attention to Jacob's death.

Anonymous is a loosely organized group of undisclosed Internet users that strongly opposes censorship and surveillance. Its members — often dubbed a "hacktivist" group — have hacked several government websites and banded together for various causes.

Most recently, the group leaked private information concerning a 2012 Steubenville rape case.

After demanding an apology from school officials and local authorities — who allegedly covered up the incident to protect athletes involved in the rape — an offshoot of Anonymous posted a video of the perpetrators making jokes about the incident. They were soon found guilty.

Given the nature of the group, it's hard to tell how far-reaching its efforts can go or who all is involved. The "official" Anonymous news Twitter account, with more than 1 million followers, has not yet tweeted about Jacob. Some skeptics have claimed the recent video and its following tweets aren't legitimate, but those who have experience working with Anonymous say that's hardly the case.

"From what I am told, it is legit," said Alexandria Goddard, a blogger who helped uncover the Steubenville case. "From my experience, there are no 'fake' Anon video responses."

Anyone can be "Anonymous" if they choose to do so because the group has no hierarchy or structure, Goddard said. The users spread information exponentially using social media to gather support for social issues.

"Anons follow other Anons and will re-tweet information that appears on their timelines," she said. "Anytime you tweet to someone with many followers and they re-tweet, you are widening your audience."

Brady Gasser, a close friend of Jacob's, refused to talk in-depth about the video and social media movement. He answered simply with two words: "It's legit."

The Register contacted Twitter user @Anon_WV Wednesday through a direct message on Twitter. The user explained Anonymous members are not necessarily trying to attract anyone's attention, but "simply want the justice system to do its job."

"My original goal was simply to ensure that Mike (Limberios, father to Jacob) was not alone in protecting Jake's grave," the user explained. "On further study some inconsistencies in the investigation were noted. Our Anonymous members joined in and created a video. At that point it became an operation, #OpJusticeForJake."

The user cited Anonymous' role in kickstarting protests that improved the investigation of the Steubenville rape case. It continued, "We threaten nobody. We are completely peaceful. We seek a better world, the one we were all promised."

Its final warning: "We are watching. We expect justice or you Expect Us."

Jacob was shot and killed March 2, 2012. Sandusky County officials ruled the death a suicide, but a forensic pathologist hired by the Limberios family examined the body and determined it was a homicide.

Theres a cell working from reletivly close. How else would a little known case like stubinvll get noticed? That story didn't make national headlines until anonymous got involved. Hell, it was near unheard of in the brother part of the very same state. So would it be reaching too far for them to have heard of Jakes case? I think not...

If it was just some guy using the video as a tool, it worked. Twitter speaks. Haven't had access to my laptop yet today to check the forums for activity on this subject yet. If it is them, those for Jake just gained some excessively powerful firends.

It's all over twitter :) one account I saw that posted about it had 12k followers.

I'd like the whole thing to get a TON of attention, and not just referring to Anonymous. The whole thing wreaks of foul play, and I would like nothing more than to see something come from the grieving.

I also credit Sheriff Sigsworth for the photo of him with Jacob's dad. Pure class act!

Again, if it gets the full Anonymous' attention, so be it. This family deserves a fair ending, and I hope that when it's all said and done, they find peace.

I fully support the family, and they have my prayers.

But I think the attention needs to fall away from Anonymous, now, so that the family can do what they need to do. If Anonymous uses their 'powers', and it helps bring closure and results, then the efforts of WHOEVER have paid off. But either way, now, I think it should be allowed to run it's course. I'm certain we'll hear plenty more, if Anonymous is involved, and has their way.

What everyone sees, hears and reads, in the public eye, are only tiny bits of what Anonymous is / does.

Do they have their place? Yes.

But not all of their members, nor their wannabe's, speak for the 'whole'. So I think time will tell if the 'whole' gets involved, and if they take ownership of the video, or, as I'd almost assume more, they acknowledge it didn't 'start' with them, even if they choose to followup on it, and get involved.

I'll go one step further. I have yet to find ANY of the primary Anonymous communications streams (Twitter / Facebook / other) with even a single post about this. And yes, I monitor as many of them as possible, to keep up on the state of their current activity. They generally don't hide any.

Again, if they get involved (they certainly might), then I'd expect to see even a dropped hint, on at LEAST one of their threads, somewhere, at that time.

But as of now, well after this video hit the net - nothing.

I don't mean to discourage the family, as I'm certain you'd appreciate all the help and support you can get. And I agree it should be strongly investigated. I just don't buy (yet) Anonymous' true involvement. Any wannabe with half a desire could've created this video, to draw attention from the real group.

Devils advocate here, but what is everyone gonna do if this next step comes back with the same conclusion. At what point will all this stop? Will the family be satisfied if the conclusion continues to be the same from potential higher levels? Just want to point this out on all the attacks on Sandusky County, because if it comes out in the end that all has been done, a lot of people will have egg on their face. Lets just hope a close is around the corner for this situation

who's worshiping the devil? It's just a phrase.. sort of the same line as lets look at the other side of the coin.. I'm just tired of hearing about this.. to me it's time to let this issue die. I have read all there is, and yes there are some facts that jump out at me and by the look some screw ups, not enough questions asked/answered. so yes, lets get those answers.. my questions is, what happens if all is done and the answer isn't what the family likes? Is this all for life insurance, because as an outsider that's what it feels to me.. it doesn't pay out on suicide, but murder its a payout.. I'm not trying to be cruel here, just pointing out some facts that I feel some are afraid to point out. Me, I don't have a dog in this fight, I just want to see an end. Either way, for the family, or for whoever, just an end. But until the final straw falls, we need to not be as harsh on sandusky county at the moment. Lets see where all the final chips fall and then take it from there.

Krissy3

Jake was 19 years old so its very doubtful his parents had life insurance on him with a job at Home Depot or somewhere along those lines. I'm sure whatever money that he may have had in life insurance from his job has long been spent plus some in paying for both a forensic pathologist, a very well known one at that, and over a years worth of legal fees.

mojorising

You should point out some right facts that aren't garnered from your own head. Life insurance pays after two years from the original contract if it is a suicide. This isn't a ploy. How many parents do you know that take out large contracts on their children? I don't know any. This is an awful thing for a parent to have to go through, insurance is probably one of the issues on the low end of their pecking order.

Krissy3

All can NEVER be done because they allowed crucial evidence to be destroyed because they didnt want to be bothered with doing their jobs! They threw away blood spattered shoes, let the body be prepared for burial without being examined for soot, blood spatter, and anything else that was wiped away when he was embalmed. Those are things they can never take back and never make right. The family should never have had to spend their own money to get an autopsy done in the first place, especially when they begged Sandusky County to do it at the beginning!

Krissy3

And if it comes down to it and they can't say with 100 percent certainty that it was a suicide, at the VERY least the death certificate should be changed to undetermined.
