A 19-year-old Castalia father is dead after what may have been an accidental shooting, according to Sandusky County Sheriff's deputies.

Deputies arrived at 110 Sandusky County road 294 at about 9:45 p.m. Friday and discovered Jacob Limberios had shot himself in the head with a .357 Magnum revolver while at least three of his friends were watching.

His friends told deputies they didn't think he realized the weapon was still loaded when he pulled the trigger, according to the report.

"Everybody there was extremely shocked about what occurred," Sandusky County Sheriff's Capt. Michael Meggitt said. "He wasn't distraught. There's not one person there that thought he did that intentionally."

Deputies seized the gun and a single shell casing as evidence, along with two pocket knives, a pair of brass knuckles and a prescription bottle Limberios had been carrying in his pockets.

Limberios had attended EHOVE and had a young daughter, according to his Facebook page. He appeared to be comfortable using weapons and had recently posted a video of himself shooting the .357 revolver.

No one who is "comfortable" with weapons would ever point one at himself, even if he believed it to be unloaded. Firearms Safety 101: Never point a loaded gun at anything you don't intend to kill. Corrollary: Every gun is ALWAYS loaded.

This is apparently a tragic accident. Unfortunately, it's yet another one of those tragedies that is utterly pointless and completely preventable. Guys (and gals), it's NOT funny, it's NOT cute, it's NOT manly, it's NOT a party trick to pretend to shoot yourself. It can, however, turn out to be something that nobody (except you, of course, because you're DEAD) will ever be able to forget.

Sympathies go out to his little girl who will never know her daddy as well as she should have. I also feel terrible for the people who it appears witnessed this awful thing. My best wishes for your healing, too...

@ The Answer Person....what's stupid and senseless is the comment you made. Sheesh.

Factitious

Very sad.

Just because you have the right to own a gun doesn't mean it's a good idea to do so.

If gun owners-to-be are honest with themselves, in many cases they'd realize that they're motivated by fear as much as anything. If they knew that domestic weapons are far more likely to cause unintended harm than to ever actually be used for defense, perhaps more would decide against it.

 To The Answer Person,

Jake was a great kid and its sad that your are making assumptions of him based off of a less than scholastic newspaper. He was a great father and raised a beautiful little girl. He may have been a young father but his little girl was his life. Please prayer for his daughter and girlfriend.

Praying God's mercy on this family who has suffered such a great loss. I know many good fathers who are 19 and some even younger. What a beautiful family.

Thank you @ReallyPeople... Young or not Jake was an AMAZING father to that little girl. A person's age has no reflection on their parenting. My mother was a high school parent as well... She was phenominal and has raised me to be a compassionate, intelligent, functioning member of society.

@The Answer Person... Shame on you.

My heart just breaks for Jake's family. He will forever live on through his gorgeous daughter. I know everyone will make sure little Ella knows just how amazing of a person her daddy was.

Those of you on here who just want to spread your negativity I have one word for you-- Disrespectful!

My love, thoughts, and prayers go out to everyone touched by this tragedy!!

Local Reader: I couldn't have said it better myself.  He was a great father to his daughter and would do anything for her.  Age doesn't make a difference; I was born to a teenage mother and I like to think that I came out just fine.

The Answer Person: Thank God your ignorant post was removed.  Keep your comments to yourself.  You should be ashamed.  It's sad that people even have to read such a thing during times like these.

My heart goes out to Mike, Shannon and the rest of Jake's family.  I have known this family for many years.  May God give you strength during this time of tragedy.

Yes, there certainly have been way too many tragedies this past week in our surrounding area.  This is the second young man from Sandusky County that has died from a gunshot wound and then there have been all those terrible traffic deaths.  Let's all give thanks we're still here and pray for those going through difficult circumstances.

Since the Sandusky County sheriff's dept. responded, I would say this happened in Sandusky County. If the incident happened in Erie County the Erie County Sheriff's dept would have responded.

This is so sad. Reminds me why I hate guns.

Nothing can make this tragedy any less than it is. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

Not able to read The Answer Person, but I will take everyone else's word for it.  Kiss the **** off!  That is so disrespectful.  Having attended Margaretta and relatives that lived on that street, I can say that his family is a good family.  This will be a horrible loss.

Every one needs to remember that unless you, yourself, just unloaded a gun, then it should be thought of as loaded.  Terrible tragedy.  I pray for the family.

I would hope everyone leaving messages here remembers a couple of things.   This young man has a family who is beside themselves with greif.  Those who feel the need to make mean hurtful comments think about it how you would feel if this was your Son, Brother, Significant other, Father, Grandson, Friend, ect ect....  This was a very tragic accident that took the life of  a wonderful young man.  I know this family on a very personal level, and they do not need more    I see that most the comments are kind words to the family that is what is needed.  I am glad i didn't see the ones that were removed, really hoping that eveyone else thinks before they speak.

My thoughts to his family and friends, a tragic accident indeed.   A simple thought for those reading, I never owned or will never own a revolver. I own a number of hand guns and all have magazines, the bottom line is the temptation to keep the ammunition in close proximity to the chamber is less with an auto than with a revolver. It takes one or two seconds to slam in a mag and load the auto. I know some will argue, but the auto is much safer in a home as well, yes you can argue that the two seconds it takes to load could cause a burglar to get you, but really, if you sleep through them breaking in then they probably found your loaded revolver in the night stand and will be killing you anyway. Keep the magazine under the mattress, maybe the kids will not find it, just keep the two apart because the chance of the firearm going off by accident is way greater than you using it to protect your family!   Just saying!
Norma J-C

My sympathies and prayers to his family.

The truly sad part is that we have become a nation living in fear and resort to violence by any means to protect our lives. Put your life in His hands and he will take care of you and yours. Those who live by the gun will die by the gun and yet we fail to learn this lesson.

 Jimbo and eightball...

If you read the reporter's comment he said this is the second young man *FROM* Sandusky County.

I said where he was *FROM* Erie county not Sandusky... I did not say that it happened in Erie County. I was correcting where Jake was from, not where it happened.

The first young man lived in Sandusky County and died there... Jake lived in Erie County but died in Sandusky. That is all I was saying.

vicfamily

I do not know this family, but want to give them my deepest sympathy in their time of need. Right now the family just needs positive comments and prayers, no blame, no faults, because it really doesnt matter, and will not change the situation that has happened. May god embrace this family and hold them close in their time of sorrow of a loved one.

SamAdams

2cents,

Guns do not go off by accident. Even loaded guns do not go off by accident. I have yet to see a gun of ANY stripe, loaded or unloaded, pull its own trigger. Guns go off by "accident" only when they're mishandled.

eightballcue1,

Why does this remind you of why you "hate guns?" Because somebody did something stupid with it and, as a result, killed themselves? Then please tell us all how much you hate cars, prescriptions, the water, pit bulls, ladders, and gas furnaces, will you? All of these things can prove fatal if you do something stupid. I don't suggest that a momentary episode of "stupid" is deserving of death by any stretch of the imagination. But however much good any tool can do in responsible hands, those same tools can prove extraordinarily dangerous if treated irresponsibly. Guns are no better or worse than a claw hammer or, as the current headlines note, a box cutter. It's all in the hands of those who wield them.

The bottom line is simple enough: If you don't know how to handle a firearm properly, don't touch it. If you don't want a firearm, don't buy one. If you DO want a firearm, for pity's sake, LEARN to handle it properly. A little personal responsibility goes a long, long way...

jake was one of my best friends. he was seriously the nicest person whos ever lived. he did so much for me, and i never asked him to. every time i would try to re pay him he refused to accept. he loved his daughter more than anything, and his sense of humor was unlike anyones. him and i are huge bob dylan fans, and that's the one way we connected like we did. we would just talk bob dylan for hours, and hang out with a couple of friends and just have fun listening to dylan. he was a perfect, 19-year old kid, and for anyone to think otherwise has another thing coming. i know the real jake, i know who he is, and what he is is the greatest dad on earth.

This is another example of why I HATE that the SR alows these comments/blogs on situations like this.  The family looks like a lovely wonderful family.  Something awful happened...not intentional...there are some nice, loving comments to the family and then there are those who apparently have no feeling or heart at all...if this would have been one of their family members or friends...they would be furious at some of these comments.  Let this family deal with their grief and loss without you...If you have nothing nice to say....as my Mom would say....KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!  We ALL make mistake in our life....some of us don't have then posted on SR.

God Bless Jacob and his family and friends.  You all will have a guardian angel watching over you from now on.

 Jon-Erik  Hexum

This was sheer stupidity - tragic as it  is.   Period.

Taxpayer

I recall someone from Erie County telling me about an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper by the name of Joe Limberios.  Does anyone know if there is a connection?  This is a tragedy.  You can argue all you want.  Here is a tip.  Do NOT come on to a blog and try to CONTROL what everyone should post or comment.  It is purely moronic to DEMAND what people should say just because YOU think you are now the divine power.  Standing on a liberal soapbox to bestow self-anointed authority over everyone else is muttonheaded to say the least.  You WILL get your feelings mutilated posting on a blog with people under uncredited names or call signs.  The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution still rules (So far) so GET A LIFE!  Here is the truth.  The coroner's report will state his death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  According to the witnesses (who will live with this for the rest of their lives) he did not deliberately intend to end his own life.  But, there are NO other choices for the coroner to select.  I have argued this before because the death certificate will infer the deceased committed planned suicide when they did NOT.  It is a terrible reality and the painful TRUTH.  I do wish there were other choices as to "cause of death."  SamAdams is absolutely correct.  You do NOT show out while handling firearms.  This was a costly mistake and the ultimate price was paid.  It only took a second to make this mistake because no one could stop him.  To me, such a mistake is NOT fair in comparison to the end result.  We will all ask why.  YOU are free to do anything you want as long as you do not hurt others, OBEY the rule of law and be responsible.  Godspeed Mr. Limberios and condolences to all his family and friends.  I am so sorry for your loss.

lkjh01asdf

Joe Limberios is a retired state trooper. Been retired since the early 90's. Family to Jacob, but no connection with this tragic accident in any way, shape or form.

bobaluey

I guess it depends  on ones'  definition of a mistake.   What if he would have pointed it at someone  else and the gun went off.   We would be reading a whole  other story.     It certainly was preventable.

Maybe the paper should run an article in  firearm safety.    Then again,  what good would it do if people don't pay attention.

badsuzee

my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this young man.  there is no need to make assumptions about what happened.  dont you think that everyon feels bad enuff about what happened without you negative posters saying your crap on here?  everyone makes mistakes in life.  its a shame that his daughter will have to grow up without him.   there have been to many tragedies recently and its very scary what the world is coming to.   may he RIP.  God bless everyone involved

(Sam A) I never said the firearm went off by itself!   Wikipedia: “An accident or mishap is an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance, often with lack of intention or necessity. It implies a generally negative outcome which may have been avoided or prevented had circumstances leading up to the accident been recognized, and acted upon, prior to its occurrence.”   As a CCW permit holder, I found the class very informative, and I have been handling firearms since grade school. It would make a lot of sense for people who wish to purchase, handle, store and shoot guns to have a safety class under their belt, I am getting real close to saying it should be mandatory but hate to think that way. The age of young people growing up with firearms around the farm and other, learning to use them from friends and family is about gone and the majority of people have little or no experience when they purchase their first one from what I have seen at gun shows, stores and other.   Again, my thoughts go out to those close to him : (

where did this young man get a handgun? i thought a person had to be 21 to have a handgun or buy handgun ammo in ohio..

I am a firm believer in the 1st ammendment, and I agree everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I have no respect for those who use the 1st ammendment as an excuse to spread hate and discontent.      The sad sad reality is there is a family who's hearts are broken into a million pieces and will never understand how this could have happened, and  little Ella  loved her Daddy very much she will now grow up and only know the story's people share with her.  Its just a very sad Tragic Accident that has changed this wonderful family forever.  My hope is that people will choose not to spread negativity and dig deep to  find it in their hearts to show respect and compassion to this family.

To the Limberios Family, I love you all very much and will continue to keep you all close in prayer, stay strong in your faith, know that when you are at your weakest our God is there to carry you through.

turner915

My last comments certainly were from pure emotion, true. I do understand a public forum for expressing thoughts and opinions, and possibly I should have thought with my mind rather than my heart before I had expressed my feelings regarding previous posts. However, in this forum of free speak and indiscriminate thought, I would hope that occasionally some people would take in to consideration if it were them or their family before they would say such horrible things about other humans. I rarely read these opinions, purposely, but I was prompted by another friend on some of the off-handed remarks made regarding individuals attached to this horrifying tragedy. I certainly have no desire to create any further negativity, and I only disappointed myself in doing so.

So to all of you "regulars" on this blog, or whatever you deem your freedom of rant to be considered, carry on. I am confident that the real people see through your CLARITY of being so highly blessed with an "all-knowing" life and your limitless offerings of how life should be. Always remember the two way road. Hopefully, I nor others with compassion will be back here to tell you that freedom of speech does not represent loss of soul!

I love this family and all the friends that are so adversley affected and will forever live an altered life. My heart goes to the people that get it!!

God Bless the Limberios Family! Forever stay strong.

gilamonster
Not sure why my comment was removed, it contained no personal attacks.   I said prayers to the family involved.   I also stated that it is not an accident to pick up a gun, point at yourself, and pull the trigger. Its a total lack of common sense and irresponsible no matter how you try to spin. A revolver takes a whole 2 seconds to swing out and make sure it is clear, (even had it been empty still a bad practice to point at yourself.) I do feel bad for all involved but this was 100% preventable, making it more tragic. What if he had shot someone else?   Be it incompetence or lack of judgment. Incidents like this are the reasons you cant buy a new gun without it having 6 safeties on it. Not judging this young man, as I have done plenty of stupid acts myself. Again prayers to the family.
concernedtruth

I agree gilamonster, I do not believe this was a complete accident, what kind of friends let you pick up a loaded gun and don't make it very clear that it is LOADED and then let you put it to your head and pull the trigger, something is not right with this story. I do completely feel saddened by this and my prayers do go out to all involved especially the family of the young man who died.

I was shocked this morning to hear the news Jake's tragic death!  Jake worked where I work for a short while and I remember him as a nice, hard-working, and polite high shool student who loved music.  As a teenager, I was surprised by his taste in music and would often tell him of different artists he should hear. Funny... I wonder if he ever did give Lawerence Welk a listen. :)  I always enjoyed running into him at Best Buy, after he left the farm.

My condolences go out to his family and friends for a life lost much too early.  Tragic... very tragic.

You never had sex before you were 19?

You have never drank alcohol in your life?

You don't hang out with your friends on a Friday night?

It's my understanding that even when the chamber appears to be empty,  there still may be debris of some sort in  lodged in the barrel.    I'll defer that to someone who knows more about handguns than I do.

That's  what happen to the  actor  whom starry referred to.   And that was a " prop"  gun.   I also believe that was the case with Bruce Lee's son who was also killed in that manner.
