Clay Township police and Ottawa County deputies nabbed a Curtice man who allegedly tried to break into homes last Friday, deputies said.

Ryan Holt, 34, of the 11000 block Canal Avenue was charged with attempted burglary, no operator's license and failure to register.

Authorities first got wind of a man using a crowbar to break into a home in the 7000 block of North Short Road in Curtice, a deputy's report said.

Ottawa County deputy Jayson Hale talked with people near the scene who said they had not seen the silver vehicle the caller said the suspect was driving.

But Clay Township officer Jared Largent had spotted a small silver vehicle parked in front a home in the 6400 block of North Billman Road, so Hale responded with Largent.

Aluminum foil was placed over the license plate and the hood of the car was propped up, the report said.

Holt said he was having mechanical issues with his car and needed water for it when police approached him, the report said. He said the house was his grandparents'.

Officers asked permission to search the vehicle, the report said, as they proceeded to find numerous tools including a tire iron and aluminum foil.

After more questioning, Holt admitted the home was not his grandmother's, but he would not answer officers when they asked what he was doing on the property, police said.

A neighbor and relative of the homeowner went to the scene and told police the homeowner never had children.

Holt was arrested and taken to the Ottawa County jail without bond.
