Baby died with multiple injuries from attack

Blunt force also cited in Athena's death

An 11-week-old girl died last week of multiple sharp- and blunt-force trauma injuries to all areas of her body, according to a preliminary autopsy by the Lucas County coroner’s office.

The autopsy report does not specify the exact number of injuries Athena Castile suffered May 16 in a Dewey Street home in Sandusky.

Charged with aggravated murder in Athena’s death is her 19-year-old cousin, Denzel Castile, who remains in the Erie County jail on $1 million bond. He’s also charged with felonious assault and assault on a police officer.

Police say Castile used a steak knife to stab Athena multiple times at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Officers went to the home after receiving a 911 hangup call, and it took multiple zaps from a Taser to subdue him before he could be arrested.

At least one of the stab wounds perforated Athena’s skull. The infant also suffered a broken rib and a hairline fracture to the right side of her skull, according to the preliminary autopsy.

An ambulance rushed Athena to Firelands Regional Medical Center, where hospital staff worked on her for more than an hour before she was pronounced dead.

Family members have told police Castile simply snapped Thursday, and they said he had not been acting like himself for months.

Castile graduated from Sandusky High School  in 2012 and played a year of football for the Blue Streaks before enrolling at The University of Toledo. He had only recently returned to Sandusky for his summer break.

How many stab wounds?

This baby is not the first and she won't be the last. Just a fact.

Wow, it's been a rough year for kids this year!

Thinking the same thing about this area.

Children having children!

deertracker

Your point?

2cents

Lack of maturity, let their emotions direct their actions. No morals in so much of todays youth!

so.....

Wasn't his kid. No children having children.

just saying " children having children " that is a stupid statement, i had my daughter at a young age and i am a terrific mother. i graduated, i work ect. my kids do not want for a thing. being a young parent is no excuse to be a loser. if anything it should motivate you to do the exact opposite and prove to people like " 2 cents " wrong. for what this young man or what ever he is done , it is un excusable he has to be plane nuts to have done a thing like this - and another thing it was not even his child - everyone needs to stop making excuses for him, stop pounding him ( i do not know him or am i sticking up for him ) but how about focusing your energy on praying for the baby and her family to heal the best ways they can. yes i do hope that he is prosecuted to the fullest extent- yet i do hope that this boy can also find mental help so someone somewhere can sort out what in the world went wrong with him.. and he realize what a awful thing he has done-and also hopefully prevent future 'outbreaks' on our CO's ect.. but just remember the baby is gone. she does have a family. and they need support from the communities more than ever. as mad as we all are including myself and as much as i want to be angry with him and am... my heart is with athenas family and his as well because i could not fathom being in either shoes. my heart and prayers go out to both- yours should too- they deserve it.

and whoever in that house that forced the original caller to hang up from 9 11 and then the 911 operator called back and that person said there was no problem the baby's blood is on their hands too and I hope Baxter prosecutes that person as well

Lissa4u

I don't agree. From my understanding (from what I've read in the Register)Castile didn't do anything until the police were already there, so there wasn't a big problem concerning the baby until the police arrived at the residence.

I don't agree with that because the 911 call I listened to, when the Sandusky Police made the return call, the Dispatcher stated that the officers were on their way to the residence and then suddenly I could hear screaming in the background. It seemed logical to me that is when the suspect fighting to gain control of the infant. I may of missed something but that was the conclusion I made from all of it and blaming the cops is just whacked in my opinion.

starryeyes83

Shifting the blame on the cops? Are you? BULL!!!

No excuse.. his intentions were already clear before that point.

MrSandusky

Lissa4u is correct, it is the Cops fault. Everything that happens in the Sandusky is the Cops fault. It is never the fault of the individual that actually committed the act, ever...just read these comments.

Others have gone on here and stated how this gentlemen had a history of mental disorders...yet he somehow graduated from High School and was accepted to College...

It is also typical for those like you to get on here and run your mouth. If you are not African American or black you have no idea what it is like to be black. Stop comparing apples to oranges and try to actually contribute to the conversation if that is possible

KnuckleDragger

Neither do you white boy. Quit acting like you do, just because you are in an interracial marriage. There is a fairly well known study done by black sociologist Maruice Mangum that discusses African American distrust of the police and government. According to Mangum's results, SuspectBlackMale is right on with his assertion. Your ignorance, and people like you are the reason the black community is suffering. Continue to turn your back and pretend like it doesn't exist.

Ok. I agree with that. My apologies

Get your facts straight! The baby was alive when the caller said there was no problem. The cops are not at fault here.

If you we're under 18 when u had your first child and you speak as if its not a problem, you either had a lot of mommy and daddy support or u are being supported by the system. Kids having kids is a major problem even if that is not the case here. It was just a general comment towards society in general.

TRISTINPRUITT

i did indeed have a lot of support from family which yes it did help alot. but my point is - having a child at a young age should not justify your actions or be anyones reason to drop out or be a loser...or abuse a child!! but also yes my family helped me but NO ONE RAISED MY DAUGHTER but me. i took care of her and loved her and fed her. and we did not live off the system as we do not now. having a child should not be someones excuse.. it should be someones motivation to help them better themself and the life of their child. yes teenage pregnancy is a epidemic. it is happening everywhere and i am not encouraging it. however i do think people need to wake up and accept the responsibility and if they cant provide for the baby.. give it a better family and home who can... and stop using I GOT PREGNANT YOUNG OR IM A KID HAVING A KID as an excuse because its pathetic. i hate seeing and hearing that.

Swiftshot

You obviously had some help I just don't like people justifying kids having kids when they are barely responsible for themselves. Can't expect grandma to raise the kid because having a baby is cool. That irks me.

Minuteman

He just snapped? If he "had not been himself for months" then he didn't just snap, this was a problem already in the works and observed for at least a few months. What was the reason for his behavior changes or differences? Did anyone pursue his problem, what ever it was? Drugs, relationships, or previous problems escalating?

he said she said

I feel for the family for the loss of the baby but also the loss of Denzel. I know some kids that know Denzel and from what they told me is that he is not the same person that they know. They said that the Denzel they knew 3-4 months ago is not the same Denzel that stabbed his cousin. They are not sure what happened, but the Denzel that they knew couldn't have stabbed anyone; he is not the same person.

I am in no way defending him, he should get the punishment he deserves but sometimes we have to stand back and look at the whole picture--did he have mental health problems or was there something else that made him change from the kid that everyone talked highly of to someone that took a life.
