A total of 16 candidates are vying to become Shawnee Elementary School’s new principal, including two from within Huron Schools.

The pair, as well as six others, have secured interviews, according to applications the Register obtained through a public records request.

The internal finalists:

•Meredith Cotterill, Huron Schools intervention specialist.

•Brian Kucbel, a McCormick Junior High School science teacher.

Other local finalists include administrators from Monroeville, Willard and Vermilion schools.

The district is handling its search internally, and the deadline to submit an application for the vacant position was April 18. The school board plans to conduct candidate interviews for about a month and will likely select a replacement before its May 28 meeting.

The new Shawnee Elementary School principal will begin Aug. 1.

The chosen individual will replace Satanta “Tanny” Vonthron, the school’s beloved six-year principal, who died in March after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Until June 30, Lyle Rowe, the district’s EMIS coordinator and a former district principal, is filling in as the school’s leader on an as-needed basis. Because he no longer has a valid principal’s license, he is referred to as the school’s dean of students.

I confuse easily - are the 16 listed all candidates or only 8 - and if so, who are the 8 since the two from Huron are in the list of 16 who are listed as candidates not finalists?

Sorry for the confusion — the list of the applicants didn't publish right away when we were transferring this story from print to the website. It's available at the end of the article now.
