On Tuesday, board members agreed to hire Weis as interim treasurer until they find his permanent replacement — just minutes after officially accepting his resignation, effective March 31.
The new agreement was not listed on Tuesday’s meeting agenda.
“There is a shortage of interim treasurers available in the area right now on such short notice, and this just makes sense for us,” board president Scott Slocum said. “We want to thank Mike for going above and beyond for the next few months”
Weis will earn $30 an hour and will work on an as-needed basis until June 30, according to his new contract. He will not receive any benefits, but the district will reimburse him for business-related travel.
Most of Weis’ duties as interim treasurer will take place from his retirement home in the Chicago area, he said.
His contract specifies travel reimbursement but does not include traveling to the district from his home.
The new agreement came a month after board members agreed to implement the district’s first-ever policy regarding rehiring retired administrators. It does not allow rehired individuals to earn more than a base-level salary.
Four board members voted in favor of the policy in January, while board member Tim Sowecke voted against it.
Weis has been Huron Schools treasurer since Jan. 1, 2006. His contract was set to expire in July 2015. His annually salary this year was about $105,800, with about $41,000 in benefits.
Board members concluded Tuesday’s meeting with a closeddoor session to discuss seeking a permanent replacement for Weis.
Representatives from North Point Educational Service Center are aiding board members in their search at no additional cost to the district, Slocum said.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, board members agreed to upgrade the bandwidth in all Huron Schools buildings, improving their Internet connectivity. The upgrades will cost about $24,000 total, with about 61 percent, or $14,640, reimbursed through the federal “E-rate” program.
