Don’t waste your time, money and energy traveling to Venice Beach for an outdoor workout.
Just head to Osborn MetroPark, where people can soon bulk up, stretch out and define better bodies for free.
Coined the Outdoor Fitness Adventure center, Erie MetroParks officials parlayed $50,000 in local funds to place about a dozen easy-to-use exercise equipment pieces all around Osborn MetroPark.
“The equipment is installed now,” Erie MetroParks executive director Amy Bowman-Moore said. “The area has been seeded and the outer areas need to be mulched. We are hoping for a grand opening in August.”
Park officials wanted to increase the amount of free athletic facilities to combat a local epidemic. A recent report from the Erie County Health Department reveled about 74 percent of area adults consider themselves overweight or obese.
When surveyed, community members also sought more recreational opportunities in parks, such as free exercise equipment.
“It’s something the residents have been asking about, and I’m glad we are able to respond,” said Erie MetroParks commissioner Kurt Landefeld. “People every day are walking, jogging or running around Osborn MetroPark’s trail. Now they can add these exercises to their workouts. We just hope we are giving people what they are looking for.”
Once the center opens, people can use any piece of equipment whenever the park off East Perkins Avenue is open. The park’s hours span from 8 a.m. to dusk daily.
