Supreme Court tosses anti-gay law

Chanting "DOMA is Dead," supporters of same-sex marriage burst into cheers Wednesday at news of the Supreme Court's decision invalidating part of a law denying gay marriage partners the same federal benefits heterosexual couples enjoy.

Sarah Prager, 26, cried when she heard the news standing outside the court. Prager married her wife in Massachusetts in 2011 and now lives in Maryland.

"I'm in shock. I didn't expect DOMA to be struck down," she said through tears and shaking. Prager was referring to the Defense of Marriage Act, signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996, which was aimed at preserving the legal definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.

A large crowd had thronged to the high court's plaza earlier to await not only the decision on DOMA, but also a ruling on whether a constitutional amendment in California prohibiting gay marriage could stand the test of challenge.

Most of the crowd that spilled across the sidewalk in front of the court were gay marriage supporters. One person held a rainbow flag and another wore a rainbow shawl, and a number of people carried signs with messages including "2 moms make a right" and "'I Do' Support Marriage Equality." Others wore T-shirts including "Legalize gay" and "It's time for marriage equality." At several points the crowd began a call and response: "What do we want? Equality. When do we want it? Now."

Larry Cirignano, 57, was in the minority with a sign supporting marriage only between a man and a woman. He said he drove four hours from Far Hills, N.J., because he believed all views should be represented. He said he hopes the court follows the lead of 38 states that have defined marriage as between one man and one woman

George Washington University student Philip Anderson, 20, came to the court with a closet door that towered above his head. He had painted it with a message opposing the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman and which the court is considering. His door read: "This used to oppress me. Repeal DOMA; Now. No more shut doors."

Thirty-four-year-old Ian Holloway of Los Angeles got to the court around 7 a.m. to try to get a seat inside the courtroom. Holloway said he and his partner had planned to get married in March but when the justices decided to hear the case involving California's ban on gay marriage they pushed back their date.

He said, "We have rings ready. We're ready to go as soon as the decision comes down." Holloway said he was optimistic the justices would strike down Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in California.

I can see that, for sure, but I also see fights over the "benefits" of marriage. Why is it now that single people regardless of orientation do not qualify for the same benefits as a married couple? It is unfair to millions of single people who by choice or birth don't have access to the same benefits as married folk. While said a bit tongue-in-cheek, marriage is still an exclusive class of citizen after this decision.

Observer, given that marriage is by definition a contract between TWO people to exclude all others, you can't marry two people.
Knuckledragger, did you stop to think about all the money that gay marriage will bring into the economy--marriage license fees, wedding expenses (sales taxes on goods and services, as well as income tax that those providers and wedding planners pay)?
Regardless, you can't deny someone equal rights because of economic reasons.

He can't get a job because companies aren't hiring full time in order to avoid paying for healthcare. I don't say the whole billed is flawed. Just the premise of government mandated healthcare is wrong. There are actualy some great parts to that bill just wrapped up in a bad package

The Constitution does not mention the bible, the koran, the talmud. It does not mention God. It niether endorses nor prohibits any religious doctrine. Marriage is a LEGAL contract, not merely a religious rite, as evidenced by ships' captains and judges being allowed to officiate at the ceremony.

So the California legislature passes a flawed law. The citizens realize that this law is flawed and take the proper and legal steps to place a referendum on the ballot which makes it illegal for gays to marry. The voters then go to the ballot and indeed overturn this law. The left leaning, liberals then decide to shove this up the taxpayers arse's by saying they can get married. Only in America can the gov't kick you in the nuts every day and tell you they don't really care what you say or want that they will decide what is best for you.

I don't find the need to follow the Bible, wherein the very contents of aforementioned book, were chosen (or omitted) by men with ulterior motives. By saying that I don't like a certain life-style doesn't mean I hate the people involved. I really wouldn't approve of lavender walls and purple trim in my living room. That doesn't mean I hate the colors. Matter of fact, I own a lavender shirt and a purple tie. It looks great with a dark blue blazer and gray pants.

this is where they need to change their course of thinking on this . Meaning the Judges that made the decision . How can they say this is unconstitutional when its wrote in the bible that people have followed for thousands of years and believed it for as many years ? And as far as god being mentioned in the courts , when you are sworn in to testify in a trial , dont they say so help you God ?
That tells me that the so called wisemen dont pratice what they believe in or are going against the believe to remain as a judge

Bigdad, recent college grads couldn't get jobs long before Obamacare was even developed. When people aren't retiring until they're in their 70's, and companies only want people with "experience" instead of training them, it prevents new college grads from getting jobs.

As I told one friend. I don't care if you're gay. Just don't hit on me and keep your opinions to yourself. They told me that they are just like straights. They are attracted to some people and others, they are not. I am not in favor of gay marriage (or gay relationships), I also don't like my taxes supporting this style of living, but neither do I support giving my tax dollars to SSD or welfare to pay for those that DON'T want to work.

What is the government doing in the marriage business in the first place? We don't need licenses, blood tests aren't required. Is it a money matter? Have a government sanctioned marriage for tax benefits or breaks? Marriage was a faith based activity for many years without our governing bodies holding a stake in it. Now that many things are regulated by the government, marriage is more about wealth than family. Without the taxes and legalities attached to marriage, it would be a totally different story.

This is America the land of equality, get used to it. Why deny anyone the right to marry because you personally do not like it? No one tries to deny heterosexuals the right to marry whom they want...do they? The divorce rate of heterosexuals is crazy in this country. Bible readers should understand, as someone has previously stated, the Bible was written by men and the compilation was carefully selected well after Christ died on the cross. The embodiment of Christ is meant to personify love, not hate, bashing or fear etc etc etc. There is some pretty violent and wicked stuff in the Bible, thank heaven (excuse the pun), that everything is still not as it was or we might have choir boys bringing down giants with slingshots and lopping off their heads.
