Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Grant St. on Jan. 16, where they arrived to find Richard Preble, 44, and his mother Nellie Preble, in the living room fighting for control of a Colt .357 revolver, according to a police report.

The barrel was pointed at the floor as Fremont police Officer Lester Daniels entered the home, his own gun drawn on Richard. Daniels got his other hand on the gun and ordered Richard to release it. When Richard didn’t comply, Daniels struck him in the head with the butt of his own pistol, according to the report.

The impact stunned Richard long enough for Daniels to rip the revolver away and toss it across the floor. Daniels then pinned Richard to the floor and tried to restrain him.

Richard’s mother, however, started grabbing the officer’s shoulders, trying to pull him away from her son. After Daniels pushed her away, Nellie tried again to intervene, the report said.

A second officer arrived and tried to help, but as officers attempted to arrest Nellie she stiffened her arms and grabbed at their handcuffs.

The revolver the Prebles were struggling over was loaded with six rounds, and the gun’s hammer was locked back. Six more rounds were found on a washer in an adjoining laundry room, with the rest of the box in Richard’s coat, the report said.

Richard told police he’d been drinking earlier at a bar when someone at the bar threatened him with a gun. He said he went home to get his gun to defend himself.

Police charged his mother with two counts of resisting arrest and released her from the police station.

Richard faces charges of using weapons while intoxicated, obstructing official business and resisting arrest. He has since posted bond and been released from the Sandusky County jail.
