An Erie County grand jury indicted four inmates for their alleged roles in a March assault at the county jail.

Sheldon Murphy, 19, of the 6500 block of Portland Road; Devontae Knight, 23, of the 1700 block of W. Madison St.; Marieon Ross, 18, of the 500 block of E. Adams St.; and Ffence Light, 26, of the 2200 block of St. Clair St., were all indicted on charges of complicity to felonious assault and complicity to retaliation.

Murphy, Knight and Ross entered the cell of Kory Howell, 29, the morning of March 20 and confronted him for snitching on Demarriay Fuller, according to an Erie County deputy’s report.

“They told (Howell) that they knew he had snitched on Fuller and told him that he better give them his food tray” the report stated.

After breakfast the men returned, along with Light, and went after Howell. They allegedly pummeled Howell’s head, causing injuries that required eight stitches, the report said.

Deputies opted not to charge the four men and instead passed the case to April’s grand jury to determine charges.

Each received a retaliation charge because they blamed Howell for Fuller’s arrest. A “physical harm” specification was added to each of their charges because they intended to cause harm to Howell, Erie County prosecutor Kevin Baxter said.

While the specification will not lengthen the men’s sentences if they’re convicted, it will require a longer period of supervision upon their release, Baxter said.
