Apr 8, 2013

A news release from the U.S. Attorney's office states that five members of a Sandusky family were all charged in a three-count indictment related to skimming more than $1.8 million in cash from three restaurants the family operates in the Sandusky area. The money was deposited at numerous financial institutions, said Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

Here is additional information from the news release:

Indicted are: Haralambos Gonos, age 52; Andreas Gonos, age 28; Chris Gonos, age 31; Kryiakos Gonos, age 30, and Sofia Skoura, age 52.

In count one – conspiracy to structure financial transactions to evade filing currency transaction reports -- Haralambos Gonos, Andreas Gonos, Chris Gonos, and Kryiakos Gonos are accused of taking large amounts of cash from Dianna’s Deli, Dianna’s and The Depot and making multiple deposits of cash just under the $10,000 threshold, for the purpose of evading the filing of a Currency Transaction Report. The conduct took place between 2007 and 2009, according to the indictment.

Count two charges that Haralambos Gonos and an unindicted co-conspirator conspired to structure financial transactions to evade filing Form 8300 between March 2010 and November 2011. Specifically, Gonos purchased a 2007 Mercedes and 2005 Porsche Cayenne motor vehicles by using combinations of cash and multiple cashier’s checks, according to the indictment.

Count three charges Haralambos Gonos and Sofia Skoura conspiring to engage in bulk cash smuggling in an attempt to transport currency to a place outside the United States on or about January 31, 2013. Specifically, they are accused of attempting to transport more than $14,700 to Greece, where they maintain a residence, according to the indictment.

“These defendants are accused of avoiding bank regulations,” Dettelbach said.

“It is IRS-CI’s responsibility when investigating financial institution fraud to focus on the flow of the money which ultimately leads us to the beneficiaries of this illegal activity,” said Denise Rocawich, Acting Special Agent in Charge, IRS Criminal Investigation.

If convicted, the defendants’ sentences will be determined by the Court after reviewing factors unique to this case, including the defendants’ prior criminal record, if any, the defendants’ role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation. In all cases the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases it will be less than the maximum.

The investigating agencies in this case are the Internal Revenue Service, Toledo, Ohio the Department of Homeland Security, Dearborn, Michigan, , ICE Homeland Security Investigations, Detroit, Michigan, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Detroit, Michigan. The case is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Joseph R. Wilson.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

I worked for them for 2 years and it is all true!!! my daughter got w2 s for 2 years after she quit!! 16,000 and then 6,000 messed up her taxes too

So let me get this straight, just so I completely understand, they are skimming thousands off the books in order not to pay their fair share in taxes! I have to pay my fair share in taxes, what makes them so special that they think they don't have to? And yet they charge us taxes every day we eat there. Now I'm starting to see this city's tax deficits! Keep after ALL these businesses to report their proper earnings.

That just made me mad to read this! I used to go there! Not anymore!

what about the ones whom received cash as employment $$$$those better watch out I bet they didn't pay their taxes on that money they received?????????????

C'mon dude! Really?

ROFLMAO, still there!

I wonder if the independent street corner pharmaceutical sales representatives use Form 8300

Ask one!

John Harville

goofass.... ask yours.

William Jeffers...

These people should be deported back to the United States and forced to live under the Obama regime.

My husband and I were in there less then a month ago. One of the waitresses, a very good one, rattled some plates and the little jerk behind the register came out yelling at her in front of everyone. He made more of a commotion then she did.

Does anyone know, did Bobby Gonos move back to Greece? That would be Chris and Kooleys dad. My dad and Bobby had a late night card game hall (windows blacked out) going back in the late 80's. They would have me watch Chris and Kooley (Kryiakos) sometimes.

God Of Thunder

So is Dianna's and The Depot shut down/closed???? just curious..Never ate at either one.

Nice house. Dianna's always had good food. Here's one more reason why we should move to a consumption tax - not a flat tax. The more money you have, the more you spend, even if by illegal means. You make it, you'll spend it, and the amount of tax paid increases as you purchase more. You make less, you buy less, you pay less. Too simple. Does away with the graduated tax brackets and this ridiculously complex tax system that we currently deal with every year. Makes too much sense - that's why it will never happen.

Krissy3, as I mentioned in my comment I no longer work for them and I can't speak for the others but I'm guessing they still work for them because they need a job considering the bad economy. Trust me they are getting
Out of there soon. The boys weren't drug addicts... But they sold drugs. So is that really any better? Although I don't see why they need to when they have all this money. Some of the guys were worse than the others. They cause scenes in both of the restaurants. Even my regular customers told me awful comments they have made through out the years discriminating women and Americans. One incident I witnessed was when a regular customer was finishing his cup of coffee when we were closing and was trying to have small talk with the bobby. (The father of the family) Bobby ended up saying and I quote his exact words. The way I look at it Flannel * he pointed to the customer* cashmere *pointed to himself* if it wasn't for us you Americans would starve. That is just one of the incidents I have witnessed and know about. They embarrass there employees and there customers. I told them they were going to piss off the wrong person one day. To all of you who don't know them and are sticking up for them, you are entitled to your own opinion but let's just say there is more to this story and the truth will come out. And for those of you who are sticking up for them and actually know them.. Then that's nice of you for being a good friend.. But if you truly know them then you know there capabilities.

John Harville

A gay old time in Sandusky!!!

Krissy also I believe they did help out charities to make themselves look good. They are very Munipulative. I also know of when I regular customer of years who helped opened the restaurant every morning suddenly passed away... We started a donation for his family and to get flowers from him. We just asked our regular customers at the depot and employees and the owners wouldn't allow it.. Why? They said because everyone dies and we shouldn't sympathize his death. True words of wonderful people. Also a fraction of there money goes to paying people off so they don't take them to court. What about the affairs the father got caught having with employees through out the years? I can keep on going. Nothing anyone can say can fix all of re horrible things they have done to people.

Old tiger, there was no way to make themselves look good because they simply dropped off money as a donation. They always cater our events but they just bring the food and drop it off before the event starts. We don't put their names anywhere or anything, so it's not like they are getting publicity. I'm only talking about two of the boys when I say they too by the way. I don't know the others and can't speak on what they do or don't do but I have known these two since grade school and have been good friends with them. I spend time with them regularly and they are genuinely nice guys. Maybe they are just nice to me, but I doubt it.

Greeks are great sheep farmers.

But terrible tax contributors!

I always wondered how they got so rich selling 99 cent breakfast special. 2 eggs, 2 bacon or sausage, hashbrowns, very good, and toast for 99cents?

Not sure if this has been posted or not - to many pages of comments to read thru - I am curious to know how the purchase of the old Ponderosa building ties into all of this. I know that they did buy it but it was constantly up for sale even after they bought it, like it never happened and now this. Just seems strange and I wonder if it's connected in any way

tell it how it is

Um, people...they were keeping their OWN money.
Get over it. They won't get in any trouble, as they shouldn't.
