Veteran teacher and basketball coach John Cahill announced he’s running for commissioner as an independent.

Cahill joins a field that includes Charles Schwochow, a Republican write-in candidate in the May 6 primary, and Wilson Forney, a Democrat.

All three appear likely to be on the November general election ballot.

Other candidates could join the race. Other possible independent candidates have until May 5 to file for office, said Barb Tuckerman, director of Sandusky County’s election board.

Damschroder stepped down so he could take a job as a Fremont firefighter.

“Being a commissioner and serving this county is something I’ve been exploring for some time,” Cahill said in a news release announcing his race. “I love Sandusky County — it is home for me. With Commissioner Damschroder’s surprising resignation, the opportunity to run is one that presented itself earlier than I imagined and was one I couldn’t pass up.”

Cahill has been a middle school language arts teacher in the Clyde-Green Springs district for 22 years and has coached many sports for Clyde’s athletic teams. He’s best known as the successful head coach of the Clyde Lady Flier basketball team.

Meanwhile, the central committee of the Sandusky County Republican Party will meet today to name a replacement for Damschroder to serve out his term for the rest of this year.

Two candidates have applied for the appointment: Schwochow, the party’s presumptive nominee for the post, and Stanley Root Jr., a former member of Fremont’s school board.

Both candidates will be given a chance to speak the committee, said Justin Smith, chairman of Sandusky County’s Republican Party.

“They’ll each make their case, and then we’ll vote,” Smith said.

But in any event, Schwochow will be the Republican candidate, as it is too late for anyone else to seek the party’s nomination, Smith said.

Root is a Matt Damschroder relative.
Independents need 197 valid signatures.
Has Cahill actually filed, or just announced. Yesterday he was seeking signatures on FB, noting "I need a lot".
