A Sandusky woman was arrested Tuesday for swiping her aunt’s debit card information and using it to pay for a phone card and commissary cash for her imprisoned son, police said.

Ricca Rivers, 38, 100 block Taylor St., was charged with theft, misuse of credit cards and receiving stolen property — all fifth-degree felonies.

Rivers’ aunt went to Sandusky police on Monday after learning $1,100 had been drained from her credit union account over a two- or three-month period, according to a police report.

The woman contacted each company where fraudulent charges had been made, learning some payments went toward Rivers’ cell phone bill. Other payments went toward an inmate calling card for Semaj Smith, Rivers’ son who is jailed at the Lake Erie Correctional Facility. Even more cash was spent for a money card used at the prison’s commissary, the report said.

The woman said Rivers frequents her house often and has recently noticed money missing from her purse. Though the woman still had her debit card, she suspected Rivers may have copied its number and used it that way, the report said.

When officers located Rivers Tuesday, she said she did not do anything and knew nothing about the theft. Rivers is being held at the Erie County jail on $15,000 bond.

Can't believe she isn't in jail for shoplifting. She used to come into our store and shoplift all the time. Guess it was slaps on the wrist and don't do it again, which went into one ear and out the other. See son learned well from momma if he is also in jail.
