Mary Sullivan, 49, 1300 block Cleveland Road W., was charged with domestic violence.

Sullivan’s elderly mother had been living with Sullivan at her Huron home when at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, she broke down and called her other daughter, according to the report. The mother said Sullivan hit her face and head multiple times that evening for turning on the television, the report said. Officers observed fresh scratches and scrapes on the woman’s neck and cheek.

Sullivan denied striking her mother’s face, saying she only struck her hand with the television remote because her mother was angry Sullivan spilled a drink, the report said.

Sullivan was taken to the Erie County jail, where she remains on $5,000 bond.

This story saddens me for many reasons. I have known Mary for many years. This is unfortunately an example of how mental illness can be so devastating. At one time Mary was a loving mother, a productive and very successful member of society and had the world at her feet. Raised in an all Catholic girls school and educated and raised in a wonderful family. The Mary I knew years ago would have never done something like this. Mary needs help..she is not a bad or evil person, but indeed very sick. For those of us that know her it has been hard to watch her self destruction at the hands of mental illness. Please pray for her and her family (as well as her mother.) Mary was always one to help people..and not inherently violent by any means. Please reserve judgement but instead pray that she gets the right help to get get back to her old self again.

And one more thing..Mary does not drink any form of alcohol or do any drugs. In all the years iI have known her i have never ever seen her drink. Not even a sip at her wedding years ago. No drugs either. I recall her taking gently used clothes to the homeless shelter (when she had $$) to help those in neede on many occasions. Just hope she gets the help she so desperately needs. If you read this..we are praying for you Mimi. Listen to the professionals and accept the help.
