Kwanletha Bell, 33, of the 1000 block of W. Jefferson St., was charged with felony assault.

Wednesday afternoon, Bell called the jail’s switchboard and accused a night-shift jail guard of cutting her hair while she slept, according to an Erie County deputy’s report. When the board’s operator told her no one had touched her hair, Bell called the woman a derogatory name, the report said.

Another inmate then called the switchboard and said Bell was being disruptive in their shared jail pod, which drew corrections officers to the area. They found Bell shaking her fist and screaming about her hair being cut, the report said.

Bell yelled “let’s go” and then charged at one jail guard, who narrowly missed being punched in the face but was still struck in the shoulder, the report said.

As guards wrestled Bell to the floor, one of them suffered an injury to the wrist. Bell was then taken to an isolation room.

She was originally jailed on Sept. 25 for failing to register as a sex offender. She remains in jail without bond.

The other incident involved Fred Watson, 22, of the 1900 block of Camp St., who was charged with possession of a deadly weapon while under detention.

On Saturday, inmate Devon King tipped off jail guards to a shank inside Watson’s jail cell, according to a deputy’s report. On searching the cell, two guards found a sharpened toothbrush, which Watson said did not belong to him, the report said.

When detectives interviewed Watson on Tuesday, he maintained the shank was not his, the report said.

Watson said he had previously told a jail guard “there was something in his cell that he did not want there.” Prior to that comment, however, he allegedly showed the toothbrush to King.

Watson insisted the shank was already in his cell when he was booked into the jail two days prior, according to the report.

In June, officers had also located a homemade shank in King’s cell, after he allegedly fastened a razor blade to a toothbrush using an adhesive bandage, according to another report.

Watson was jailed on Oct. 10 on bench warrants for felonious assault, disrupting public service, aggravated menacing, disorderly conduct and criminal damaging. He remains in jail on $5,000 bond.

I don't know the layout of Erie Co.jail or any other ones for that matter. They really put males and females in the same pod? How would that not create turmoil?
