A Sandusky County deputy checking buildings at the Green Creek Township maintenance facility after 4 a.m. noticed a padlock sitting on the ground next to an unleaded fuel tank, according to the deputy’s report.

The part of the tank where the lock had been locked was broken off, the ground was damp and there was a strong odor of fuel.

It appeared someone siphoned the fuel from the tank, then left a set of tire marks.

Deputy Brian McGrady suspected he just missed the suspect and followed the tire marks until they disappeared in the direction of Limerick Road toward Clyde.

Township officials told deputies about 140 gallons of fuel was missing from the tank, which had recently been filled for $3.23 a gallon.

Deputies documented the tire prints and shoe prints left at the scene.
