Ray Peak, 54, of the 1800 block of Superior St., was charged with aggravated robbery, tampering with evidence andobstruction of official business.

Peak entered the Hy-Miler convenience store at 2 a.m., donning an all-black outfit, an orange bandana over his face and gloves, according to the report. The gas station clerk was in a back office when she heard the door chime and checked thesurveillance monitor, seeing a man approach the counter.

The woman later told police she did not intend to wait on the man, but she eventually walked out to the register after the man kept calling out “hello.” She saw a dark-colored object in the man’s hand, and it appeared to be a gun, the report said.

Surveillance video shows the man placing a plastic grocery bag on the counter, pointing at it, tapping it with his hand, and demanding the clerk hand over all the money, the report said.

The clerk allegedly gave the man about $350 in cash, and she then locked herself in a bathroom as the man departed on foot.

Video showed Peak running across the street and entering an apartment unit at a halfway house, Sandusky police Lt. Robert VanScoy said.

Officers reviewed the video, and within about one hour they located Peak inside the halfway house. He was wearing the same shoes as the man in the video, but he had no bag of cash, VanScoy said.

Officers found the frying pan handle in a nearby field, and some of the discarded clothing in the room. As of Monday the money had not been recovered, VanScoy said.

Peak told officers the robber must have been someone else, and he denied any involvement. He was taken tot he Erie County jail, where he remains, with bond set at $37,000.
