Two death penalty cases could cost Erie County $600K

Two capital murder trials scheduled for 2013 could cost local taxpayers up to $600,000.

Two capital murder trials are pending in Erie County: Michael Milner, for allegedly beating to death 3-year-old Owen Barker in July at a Fulton Street home, and Curtis Clinton, accused of strangling Heather Jackson and her two children — Celina, 3 and Wayne, 20 months — to death on John Street in September.

The average cost of the initial trial phase in the state is about $300,000. Normal courtroom appeals and automatic appeals related to death penalty cases can skyrocket the expense beyond $1 million, according to the Ohio Public Defender's office.

For more on these cases and how they might affect local court budgets, pick up a copy of Wednesday's Register.

I for one am tired of the crybaby "cruel and unusual" punishment crap.
They killed somebody, doesn't get any more cruel or unusual than that.

Also should be one appeal within 6 months and it's toast time, not drug out for 30 years.

So why should these dirtbags be given any better consideration?
Bring back "Old Sparky".
He doesn't care what color you are, how skinny or fat you are.
What's a little zap between killing buddies?

Heck, I will give ya the benefit of the doubt. One year and one appeal. Firing squad....again a bullet does not know race, size, gender, etc.

I absolutely 100% agree with you! Yep one year ; one appeal! And if I may add~~~~ bullets know no race but alot of money would be saved by a big maple tree and a $5.00 peice of rope delicately tied off at one end forming a loop to be elegantly but effectively be placed around the sorry murderers necks! And DO NOT; I REPEAT DO NOT GIVE THEM THE CHANCE FOR EVEN ONE APPEAL. AS SOON AS POSSIBLE HANG 'EM HIGH!!!!!! Save more human life on our streets, sending a message to all others {like Randleman} that you live by the gun; DIE by the gun, or in their case by the rope. Death knows no color but Only God has Your Number!I do not see why Anyone would even question the $$$$$$$ because if they get off like Randleman did; oh boo~hoo life without parole>>>>> that is pure unadulterated CRAP...I for one do not want to pay thru the nose to house and feed and provide medical to these sicko-creep, life stealing murderers~~~~give them the juice as soon as possible along with randleman....And save Ohio money and make our streets a little bit safer knowing that they ARE D E A D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Save money and end the barbaric death penalty, it’s a win-win.

deertracker

Why not just do the same as was done in the Randleman case? If the county wants to avoid a 600k tab that would be an alternate solution unless the goal is to make the lawyers a bunch of money. Putting these guys to death is not going to bring anyone back to life so save the taxpayers some money and still get justice. We all know they will live a long time in prison so why spend the 600k?

BECAUSE THEY NEED TO FRY!!!!!! SO THAT OTHER CREEPS, SICKOS, PERVERTS, RAPISTS, AND ALL OTHER ANTI-HUMAN PIACES OF CRAP;ETC, ETC, ETC WILL NOTICE THE ACTION SET FORTH BY OUR COUNTY TO SHOW THEM THAT WE WILL NOT TOLERATE THESE ACTS OF VIOLENCE...AND EXCUSE ME ---THAT 600K FIGURE IS MERELY THAT...A FIGURE TO SCANDALOUSLY MAKE THE ATTORNEYS AND COURTS AND JAIL/PRISON SYSTEM MORE MONEY!!!! LIKE I SAID EARLIER ~~~~~ NUTHIN LIKE A HORSE, A BIG TREE, AND A FIVE DOLLAR PIECE OF ROPE---AND HANG 'EM HIGH!

richrs

Cut a deal, give them life w/out parole and get it over with.

Julie R.

So who cares how much it costs? These monsters deserve to die. What they need to do is stop this appeal bullsh*t. One appeal and that's it.

paws4thought

Yes, putting them to death will not bring back the victims, but getting rid of the perpetrators - if in fact they genuinely are guilty - would help save lives. Too many times, the rights of the criminal are held in greater respect than the rights of the victim. Crimes like these occur more and more often because people know they can get away with it. Vigorously enforce the death penalty and we would see less such cases in the future.

deertracker

Your point is well taken but this is about cost not rights. You are getting rid of the perps by putting them in jail for life....assuming they are actually guilty.... I don't believe criminals kill because "they know they can get away with it". We really don't know "why" just yet since everything is on a gag order. I think we should get rid of the death penalty if we are not going to enforce it without the enormous cost involved.

jas

You might want to review your Ohio and US Constitutions. There is ZERO said about victims "rights" and a lot about the rights of an accused person. Just sayin'. By the way, the deterrent affect of capital punishment has nver been proven. The reality is that most criminals never give a thought to the consequences of their crimes because they don't expect to get caught. You can't deter someone with any punishment, no matter how severe, if they think they won't have to face the consequences because they won't get caught.

What is it that would make (us) any different from (them), if we killed (them) tomorrow, without a trial?

Tru Grit

People are complaining of the trial costs...... Do you know how much it will cost to keep those dogs alive in prison until they die. It will be much more by the time they put these dogs down. The justice they should meet is death nothing less. I would also like to say this. I hope these two don't get segregated in prison if they're not put to death, they will get prison justice.

Please educate yourself on the costs of the death penalty versus life in prison. It will save you the embarrassment of looking ignorant.

didhejustsaythat76

600,000 are you serious ?appeals ? you must be off your rocker ! give them the same treatment they gave their victims .again american people pay the price for someone elses mistake ..people cannot afford to feed their own families working all week ,and you expect them to pay for this ?..how about a piece of 3/8 steel braised cable around each of their necks with ten foot in between them put one on each side of the busiest set of railroad tracks in the county so then they can watch for 20 minutes before the train rips their heads off ....free ! and it would show these scumbags the people wont stand for this any longer !

Fromthe419

If the Wood County Prosecutor hadn't plea bargained Clinton down to a lesser charge he would have been in jail and not free to do what he did to Miss Jackson and her precious children. No plea bargains, let them rot in jail or be put to death either way keep these creeps of the streets for life or death...either way

Tru Grit

Thinkagain, please save your self the embarrassment. I did some fact finding so I wouldn't look so ignorant, looks like you're the ignorant one no offense. From doing just some simple multiplication if those two dogs live in prison with the average at 25k which was taken from the study I found online on correction population and costs, if they make it to 25 years behind bars it will cost $625,000. Now considering that I am so ignorant I went ahead and did some number crunching. If the young man lives till he is 65 he will cost $1,075,000 and the older man the same obviously of he goes 43 years behind bars as well. With people living longer both behind bars and in society it will probably exceed my example. I want to also point out that this study was done in 2010 so like history has proven taxes and costs have only gone up so I am sure it is a bit more then 25k now. I am now going to point out that I indeed was right, you were and will indeed be wrong and continue to be wrong. You're welcome for the info next time think before you type, it isn't completely fair though I am a corrections officer so I have a advantage on you. This the site I got the info from please feel free to visit it, though I will warn you it's in PDF format if you even know what that is. http://www.vera.org/download?fil...

The headline says $600,000 but the article states $1 million EACH. The math looks pretty close between death and life in prison. At the very least, it doesn't tip strongly in either direction where anyone can say that one or the other option is definitely more expensive. By the way, the death penalty cost is almost all upfront or at least paid in the first year while life in prison is paid out over time which actually increases the cost of the death penalty. Just sayin'.

Fromthe419

As far as that little piece of white trash that killed the baby, a concrete block dropped from about 30 feet aimed at his head would be a fine with me

Tru Grit

I also looked on the drc site. It said it costs daily 149.48, now that is subject to adjustment so lets say for the sake of argument it only $100. That is still $36,500 a year "think again" sucks being wrong. So it is cheaper to put these dogs to death. They killed children btw if you had forgotten in paying attention to my ignorance. This from just one of the prisons in ohio and we have a bunch. This site gave an exact amount to for you to see. http://www.vera.org/files/price-...

A simple Google search on cost of death penalty compared to life in prison will save you further embarrassment.

KURTje

We the people (majority) do want the death penelty for trash like this.

Tru Grit

Like I said before you can compare but through time life over death is more sorry.
