So city officials, in an attempt to lure more businesses and residents into the area, updated Huron’s zoning map.
The preliminary design awaits city council’s approval, set to occur this spring. The map cost about $30,000 to produce.
“It’s going to have a full public vetting,” Huron city manager Andy White said. “The public will have ample opportunities to access this information and speak to issues about this to different bodies”
In short, officials consolidated how many particular zones exist — reducing several different and redundant “residential” areas into three distinct, easy-to-understand zones, for instance — and modernized the map.
For instance, the zoning map lists the former ConAgra property as an industrial site.
But, under the proposal, the 10-acre property is considered mixed-use, meaning it can morph into a commercial district, business park, residential properties or a hybrid of all three.
Officials also etched out green and recreational — another new zone listed — space for public access along ConAgra’s waterfront, including a 600-foot walkway.
“Our map currently doesn’t reflect professional standards,” White said. “This is a presentation of more uniformity and simplification to coordinate development in the future”
