UPDATE 7:18 p.m.: The ride is now operational.
Cedar Point's latest roller coaster dominating the front of the park has been closed for a couple days.
Park attendees said GateKeeper has been down since Wednesday.
Cedar Point tweeted out a notice about the record breaking coaster being closed for the day on Thursday.
“Ride update: GateKeeper will not open today. But hey-71 other awesome rides await you!”
It was still closed on Friday afternoon.
Edwards confirmed it was closed due to mechanical issue but did not elaborate further.
They are working to get the coaster up and running.
He did not respond to question asking whether GateKeeper has previously experienced mechanical problems.
GateKeeper opened to much fan fare in 2013 and draws a lot of guests into the park.
“It is important that they get it operating quickly and correctly,” said Dennis Spiegel, International Theme Park Services, Inc.
It is not unusual for a ride of this sophistication, in any park including Disney, to experience problems, he said.
“I do not know why it is closed but if there is any question you close it down. Why, so no one can get hurt,” Spiegel said.
GateKeeper was manufactured by Bollinger & Mabillard. Cedar Point touted the history of reliability of Bollinger & Mabillard rides when they unveiled the coaster.
“We look on them as the Rolls Royce of the industry. Very respected,” Spiegel said. “I have been familiar with the company for 20 years, they are one of the best in the world.”
This is the second ride to be closed recently.
Cedar Point closed Skyhawk last month when a cable operating a swinging arm disconnected and swung loose. Two people were injured as the cable snapped and whipped its way down. One person was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center while the other was treated in the park.
