Eat with family when Mia Famiglia's Uptown Cafe opens at 11 a.m. Aug. 22.
“Customer service is huge. Everybody gets greeted at the door. Everybody gets treated like family,” said Raymond Segedi who co-owns the restaurant with his wife and head chef Brandace.
In a nod to its history the Segedi family when they purchased the restaurant in June incorporated Uptown Cafe into the name.
“We are excited. We are giving Norwalk a full on Italian experience,” Raymond Segedi said.
Must tries at the eatery are the pasta dishes, the stuffed shells, manicotti, chicken parmesan and gnocchi.
Not feeling like Italian, Mia Famiglia Uptown Cafe offers gourmet burgers that are about 5 inches thick, she said.
Mia Famiglia's Uptown Cafe is still working to obtain its beer and wine license. Until then they are offering non-alcoholic drinks, including the hard to find Yummy Berry Pomegranate Sobi life water.
The restaurant does not just treat customers like family, it is a family venture.
Brandace will be finishing up sauces that have been slow cooking for hours before the restaurant opens. Working alongside Brandace will be her Sous chef, Martin, who is her 20-year-old son.
Martin just graduated from culinary school and is fulfilling an internship requirement by helping the family open the restaurant.
“How many kids graduate saying I know how to launch a restaurant,” Brandace said.
The couple's daughter Miya, 16, will act as a waitress after school and their son Giovanni, 12, will help greet and seat people.
Brandace believes in fresh ingredients with very little frozen, in fact there are six refrigerators to the one freezer in the restaurant.
She believes in family eating together and she believes in large portions at a reasonable price.
“It's family quantity, like going to grandma's for Sunday dinner,” Brandace said. “You will say 'Oh my God that food was so good and I am taking some home.”
