Veggie U receives $12,500 award
The Geotrac Charitable Foundation has awarded Veggie U $12,500 to help support its classroom garden program in Huron and Erie County schools. Veggie U attitude surveys have shown a significant increase in students’ knowledge about healthy food choices and preference for vegetables as part of a healthy diet.
“Giving children an opportunity to grow their own food and learn about plants and vegetables firsthand is a great way to help them make the connection between the food they eat and how it reaches their plate, as well as the choices they have to be healthy,” said Lynne Eirons, Veggie U’s education manager.
Healthy eating campaign will help diabetics
CareSource, a nonprofit Ohio-based health plan, is launching a statewide campaign to educate its members about healthy eating and controlling diabetes.
To help members stay on track and make informed choices, CareSource will provide diabetic food boxes four times a year to approximately 800 members in every Ohio county. Patient Navigators will provide home and point of service delivery of the diabetic food boxes. The goal is to educate and build relationships with members who have been diagnosed and are high-risk.
The CareSource diabetic food box program is made possible through a $140,000 two-year grant from the CareSource Foundation to The Dayton Foodbank Inc.
The Diabetic Food Box distribution project is currently underway in Dayton, Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati.
Miller Boat Lines ferry inspected
Miller Boat Line’s ferry, Motor Vessel South Bass, is receiving its routine five-year drydocking and USCG inspection at Great Lakes Shipyard. The vessel was hauled out using the Marine Travelift, and the work on the vessel will be completed in two to three weeks.
This marks the first time Great Lakes Shipyard has performed work on the M/V South Bass. Since 2010, repairs have been performed on all of the other ferries in the Miller Boat Line fleet.
