Who did this?

The bombs that blew up seconds apart at the finish line of one of the world's most storied races left the streets spattered with blood and glass, three dead, more than 140 wounded and maimed and gaping questions of who chose to attack at the Boston Marathon and why.

Federal investigators said no one had claimed responsibility for the devastating attack on one of the city's most famous civic holidays, Patriots Day. But the blasts raised alarms of another terror attack in the U.S. after the explosions at a public event among crowds of thousands of spectators.

President Barack Obama was careful not to use the words "terror" or "terrorism" as he spoke at the White House Monday after the deadly bombings, but an administration official said the attack was being treated as an act of terrorism.

"We will find out who did this. We'll find out why they did this," the president said. "Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice."

The Pakistani Taliban, which has threatened attacks in the United States because of its support for the Pakistani government, Tuesday denied any role in the marathon bombings.

The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, denied involvement in a telephone call with The Associated Press. He spoke from an undisclosed location.

The FBI took charge of the investigation into the bombings, serving a warrant late Monday on a home in suburban Boston and appealing for any video, audio and still images taken by marathon spectators.

The fiery explosions took place about 10 seconds and about 100 yards apart, knocking spectators and at least one runner off their feet, shattering windows and sending dense plumes of smoke rising over the street and through the fluttering national flags lining the route.

Blood stained the pavement, and huge shards were missing from window panes as high as three stories. Victims suffered broken bones, shrapnel wounds and ruptured eardrums.

Roupen Bastajian, a state trooper from Smithfield, R.I., had just finished the race when he heard the explosions.

"I started running toward the blast. And there were people all over the floor," he said. "We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. A lot of people amputated. ... At least 25 to 30 people have at least one leg missing, or an ankle missing, or two legs missing."

At Massachusetts General Hospital, Alasdair Conn, chief of emergency services, said: "This is something I've never seen in my 25 years here ... this amount of carnage in the civilian population. This is what we expect from war."

As many as two unexploded bombs were found near the end of the 26.2-mile course as part of what appeared to be a well-coordinated attack, but they were safely disarmed, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because of the continuing investigation.

WBZ-TV reported late Monday that law enforcement officers were searching an apartment in the Boston suburb of Revere. Massachusetts State Police confirmed that a search warrant related to the investigation into the explosions was served Monday night in Revere, but provided no further details.

Some investigators were seen leaving the Revere house early Tuesday carrying brown paper bags, plastic trash bags and a duffel bag.

Police said three people were killed. An 8-year-old boy was among the dead, according to a person who talked to a friend of the family and spoke on condition of anonymity. The person said the boy's mother and sister were also injured as they waited for his father to finish the race.

Hospitals reported at least 144 people injured, at least 17 of them critically.

Tim Davey of Richmond, Va., was with his wife, Lisa, and children near a medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners when the injured began arriving. "They just started bringing people in with no limbs," he said.

"Most everybody was conscious," Lisa Davey said. "They were very dazed."

The Boston Marathon is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious races and about 23,000 runners participated. The race honored the victims of the Newtown, Conn., shooting with a special mile marker in Monday's race.

Boston Athletic Association president Joanne Flaminio previously said there was "special significance" to the fact that the race is 26.2 miles long and 26 people died at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

One of the city's biggest annual events, the race winds up near Copley Square, not far from the landmark Prudential Center and the Boston Public Library. It is held on Patriots Day, which commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution, at Concord and Lexington in 1775.

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis asked people to stay indoors or go back to their hotel rooms and avoid crowds as bomb squads methodically checked parcels and bags left along the race route. He said investigators didn't know whether the bombs were hidden in mailboxes or trash cans.

He said authorities had received "no specific intelligence that anything was going to happen" at the race.

The Federal Aviation Administration barred low-flying aircraft within 3.5 miles of the site.

"We still don't know who did this or why," Obama said at the White House, adding, "Make no mistake: We will get to the bottom of this."

With scant official information to guide them, members of Congress said there was little or no doubt it was an act of terrorism.

"We just don't know whether it's foreign or domestic," said Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security.

A few miles away from the finish line and around the same time, a fire broke out at the John F. Kennedy Library. The police commissioner said that it may have been caused by an incendiary device but that it was not clear whether it was related to the bombings.

The first explosion occurred on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the finish line, and some people initially thought it was a celebratory cannon blast.

When the second bomb went off, spectators' cheers turned to screams. As sirens blared, emergency workers and National Guardsmen who had been assigned to the race for crowd control began climbing over and tearing down temporary fences to get to the blast site. The bombings occurred about four hours into the race and two hours after the men's winner crossed the finish line. By that point, more than 17,000 of the athletes had finished the marathon, but thousands more were still running.

The attack may have been timed for maximum carnage: The four-hour mark is typically a crowded time near the finish line because of the slow-but-steady recreational runners completing the race and because of all the friends and relatives clustered around to cheer them on.

Runners in the medical tent for treatment of dehydration or other race-related ills were pushed out to make room for victims of the bombing.

A woman who was a few feet from the second bomb, Brighid Wall, 35, of Duxbury, said that when it exploded, runners and spectators froze, unsure of what to do. Her husband threw their children to the ground, lay on top of them and another man lay on top of them and said, "Don't get up, don't get up."

After a minute or so without another explosion, Wall said, she and her family headed to a Starbucks and out the back door through an alley. Around them, the windows of the bars and restaurants were blown out.

She said she saw six to eight people bleeding profusely, including one man who was kneeling, dazed, with blood trickling down his head. Another person was on the ground covered in blood and not moving.

"My ears are zinging. Their ears are zinging," Wall said. "It was so forceful. It knocked us to the ground."

The former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration, Paul Craig Roberts, who is called the "Father of Reaganomics" and is a former editor and columnist for the Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, and Scripps Howard News Service, has said:

"Ask yourself: Would a government that has lied us into two wars and is working to lie us into an attack on Iran shrink from staging 'terrorist' attacks in order to remove opposition to its agenda?

Retired 27-year CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who prepared and presented Presidential Daily Briefs and served as a high-level analyst for several presidents, stated that if there was another major attack in the U.S., it would lead to martial law. He went on to say:

"We have to be careful, if somebody does this kind of provocation – big violent explosions of some kind – we have to not take the word of the masters there in Washington that this was some terrorist event because it could well be a provocation allowing them, or seemingly to allow them to get what they want."

The former CIA analyst would not put it past the government to "play fast and loose" with terror alerts and warnings and even terrorist events in order to rally people behind the flag.

General Tommy Franks stated that if another terrorist attack occurs in the United States "the Constitution will likely be discarded in favor of a military form of government." Former UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter stated before the Iraq war started that there were no weapons of mass destruction. He is now saying that he would not rule out staged government terror by the U.S. government. And British Parliament Member George Galloway stated that "there is a very real danger" that the American government will stage a false flag terror attack in order to justify war against Iran and to gain complete control domestically.

In my opinion, there's a larger problem: Whether or not the government would actually stoop to such a level, there are a lot of people out there who BELIEVE it COULD stoop to such a level. I suspect that doesn't speak too well for trust or confidence in government...! That, more than any other factor, is a hallmark of a country/government on the road to ruin. And that, in turn, results in a scrambling effort to hold onto power which brings us back (surprise!) to the notion of martial law.

There's an ancient Chinese curse that says, "May you live in interesting times." It's clear now that that is, indeed, a curse, because what's happening in this country and around the world today is certainly "interesting!"

WiseManOnceSaid

That is the silliest explanation of a proverb I have ever seen. "because what's happening in this country and around the world today is certainly interesting".....Seriously? I award you two points for your critical thinking skills, and may someone's god have mercy on your soul.

SamAdams

Punctuation is everything, WiseMan. Take another look and note that "interesting"is in quotes. There's a reason for that...

Per USA Today : creator says it was a "mash up" ( WTH is that?) Anyway he's pretty pissed about it...

I'm not hip the the constantly freakin' changing 'puter lingo.

Creative editing. In the original broadcast, Peter accidentally blows up a bridge. They've taken that cell phone scene and plugged it into an interview with Costas asking him how he won the Boston Marathon. Sick.

bullydogs1971

keep in mind the cell phone scene is not the bridge blowing up....that was at the end not the pub scene. just a crazy thing to be on tv a month before...

I see we have some criminal profilers here. The sad thing is this is probably not the last act of terrorism we will see in the U.S. Prepare for your future.

every time i see a group of bipartisan defenders step up to the plate to debate the phrase "who shot first, han or greedo" always flashes through my mind... mainly because your arguments carry about the same amount of validity... poor poor close minded people still believing that either a republican or a democrat is better than the other... when will you all realize that there's always more to a political argument than the red and blue? pathetic really...

bullydogs1971

I was implying just the opposite....PUT IN CONTEXT you forgot "While America is distracted i hope they don't pass this crap!"....i was just asking questions...something we should all be doing more of...btw i do not own a gun....but i still love and respect the constitution...liberty..and the God given right to just be left the hell alone....they call it the bill of RIGHTS....because you can't vote on rights...THEY'RE RIGHTS!!!!

nah, legislation would be too slow at this point... i see a few more bombings coming up real soon at near future events and the government claiming that all of the american people are in a panic, when in reality the majority of us that don't live in large cities really have about as much interest in the topic as just reading the news article and going about ours days (aka not really caring all that much) and martial law will be passed and never really uplifted... kind of like when Cesar took control of rome from the republic and never gave the power back to the republic once the war was over... we are literally watching the same scenario happen at this point, almost play by play really. citizens realize individual power, government notices, random acts of terror arise, a small group seizes control of all decision making under the guise of swiftness of action and never relinquishes power after the threat has gone, and again we're stuck in a cycle of control that has proven many times over to not work... it's not paranoia, it's learning from the past instead of repeating the same mistakes.

the only purpose republicans and democrats serve is the illusion of choice in the matter.

How many of you know that President Obama is also Head of the UN SECURITY COUNCIL?? The only US President to hold this office! Do you also know that it is illegal under the Constitution of the United States of America?

Article I, Section 9.

"No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State."

I wonder if we put the Constitution up on the tele-prompter if he would read it??

sash

Sorry about double post. Keep losing my connection.

sash

The President of the Security Council is rotated monthly among members. The "Presidents" are normally the country's ambassador, unless a higher ranking official is present that day. Obama MAY have been Security Council President for a day if he was present, and if it was the US turn, but it could also have been Biden, Clinton, or Kerry. Highest ranking official in the room, when it is our month, is the President of the Security Council, so any previous Vice-President, Secretary of State, President or a host of others who outrank the Ambassador would be the President for that day. I imagine several of our past VP's, SOS's, and Presidents may have held the title for a day or two.

bullydogs1971

thanks for the clarification...this is true but still is unconstitutional....and usually it is the Secretary of state that is "rotated in".

"Nonetheless, the rotating chairmanship of the council goes to the U.S. this month. The normal course of business would have U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice take the gavel. However, this time will be different. Constitution be damned, Barack Hussein Obama has decided to put HIMSELF in the drivers seat, and will preside over global nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament talks slated to begin September 24th. The Financial Times says:

Barack Obama will cement the new co-operative relationship between the US and the United Nations this month when he becomes the first American president to chair its 15-member Security Council."

http://rense.com/general87/ob1.htm

sash

It's still not a constitutional issue. The "title" is questionable at best because it merely designates the chair or moderator for the meetings, Second, the United Nations is not a King, Prince or a Foreign State. It is an organization by definition and law. If we're going to start down that road, there have been a lot of Presidents who've held "titles" in organizations while President, from the NRA to Boy Scouts. Sorry, but I think there are certainly enough issues with our government and president to complain about without irrelevant stuff like this.

sash

I checked your link. I was a little confused when I read he would be seated 5 chairs away from Muammar Gaddafi! The one day meeting he chaired in the Security Council took place in September 2009. Didn't declare himself King of the World, sell Alaska, confiscate all the worlds weapons, or outlaw cupcakes. All's good.

The Bushes, Clintons, Reagen, Carter, Nixon, Powell, and many others have been photographed at Bohemian Grove.
I remember GW Bush and John Kerry being interviewed during their presidential run... and both admit to being in skull and bones (they wouldn't talk about it) along with many others....
