More than 250 people packed into the college’s Cedar Point Center for Friday’s ceremony, including scholarship donors, students and their families.

“The donors are delighted to see the tangible results of their generous contributions and for the opportunity to meet our students,” said event organizer Debralee Divers, BGSU Firelands director of enrollment management and student retention services. “Equally important, scholarship recipients appreciate the opportunity to thank those who have helped them achieve their dreams.”

Several representatives from Bowling Green State University’s main campus also attended, including Mary Ellen Mazey, the university’s president, and Shea McGrew, its vice president for university advancement.

BGSU Firelands students receive scholarships based on their achievements, as well as their financial needs, according to a news release from the college.

For some students, finances are the only obstacle standing between them and a college education.

“The scholarship I received will be of great assistance in paying for my educational expenses,” said Talon Smith, a BGSU Firelands student studying criminal justice. “It will allow me to focus my time and energy into studying, learning and growing.”

That’s the overall goal, said Bill Balzer, dean of BGSU Firelands.

“The finest expression of gratitude to our donors is to have our recipients be successful in college and then utilize their skills and abilities to contribute to the success of our community,” Balzer said.

The Firelands Campus of BGSU is an excellent option to further one's education without breaking the bank. One or two years at Firelands can save tens of thousands of dollars in educational expenses or loans.

My degree is from BGSU. No one ever ask in an interview if I went to Firelands.

Good job scholarship recipients.
