Erie County is experiencing a unemployment crisis. Many of our manufacturing jobs are closing, leaving or hoping to be sold. Yet in the midst of this uncertainty is one employer that continually goes unnoticed. Sandusky Bay Area Goodwill Industries provides education, job training and employment to people experiencing disabling and disadvantaging conditions.

I have recently had the opportunity to be a recipient of the employment and job training services provided by Goodwill Industries. At the age of 53, after several surgeries and some physical limitations, I needed to change my career path. Their dedicated team provided me with the support services and career skills training to re-enter the work force.

Please remember that when you donate clothing, jewelry, automobiles or household goods to Goodwill, 100 percent of your donation stays in your local community and can help change a person's life by giving him or her the ability to find and keep a competitive job.

Also, when you shop at a Goodwill store, 84 cents of every dollar you spend is channeled for job training and placement for someone in your community to find work and the self-respect that comes with earning a paycheck.

Enjoy the holidays and please try to remember Sandusky Bay Area Goodwill in your donation plans. The next time you pass a Goodwill donation box and see Good Willy on the front, smile back and think about what your donation could do.
