Our child has the best teacher in the area. Mrs. Judy Smith is the teacher in the Erie County high school multi-handicapped unit housed at Perkins High School.
Mrs. Smith is patient, understanding, and caring. She goes above and beyond the efforts of even the most dedicated teachers. Her expectations are high and she holds students accountable for their actions. The students may have difficulties, but they recognize when someone cares enough to challenge them to give their best. The students respond with accomplishments beyond what we as parents could only dream about.
She works with a peer mentor program using regular education students that has been a blessing to both the students in her class and the regular education students. Each year Mrs. Smith and her dedicated aides put on a play with the students in her class. Last year the play which featured a cast of her students and peer mentors received a standing ovation from the whole student body that was in attendance. To parents who worry about how cruel high school students can be, we know what a wonder this experience was. It speaks highly of the students, staff, and parents of Perkins High, but is a true testimony to the respect for and leadership and dedication of Mrs. Judy Smith.
