SANDUSKY

An 8-year-old boy was taken to the hospital as a precaution after being hit by a van when he apparently ran out onto McKelvey Street.

Cody Cebull, 400 block McKelvey St., was in good condition Wednesday afternoon at Firelands Regional Medical Center, hospital staff said. The name of the driver was not immediately available but Sgt. Richard Braun said it was unlikely he would be cited.

Braun said it appeared the boy had bumps and bruises.

Neighbor Wally Sosa said he saw the boy dart into the street and collide with the side of the van.

"I thought it was going to be worse," Sosa said.

The Grand Caravan was dented on its front passenger side and scratched.

Sosa said in this case the driver was not speeding, which kept the boy from being more seriously injured.

He said, however, that McKelvey Street is often used by speeding drivers as a shortcut between Milan Road and Sycamore Line.

The street needs a sign warning people to slow down, he said.

As family members waited for news of the boy, his 10-year-old sister Cassie agreed something needs to be done to slow drivers down. "They don't care about us," Cassie said.

She said when her cousin came to their house to tell them her brother had been hit, she thought it was a belated April Fools' joke.
