It was to no surprise that the president's announcement to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq was met with much criticism considering the Democrats comprise the majority in Congress now and Bush's approval rating continues to plummet. There is no question that the Bush administration has done a poor job handling the war up to this point but the bottom line is that we are where we are. We cannot go back and change the mistakes we've made, all we can do work to find a solution to the mess that has been created, and I assure you that that solution is not withdrawal. American withdrawal will open up the door for extremists in the Middle East, as Iraq will surely be subject to an Iranian invasion from the southeast. This would be a nightmare for the U.S as terrorists will be able to set up a base in Iraq better than al-Qaida in Afghanistan as they will have access to a good portion of the world's known oil reserves.
Both Congress and the people of the United States need to put an end to the hypocrisy and support the decisions being made. You can't just go around saying that you support the troops and then turn around and push to limit numbers and cut funding for troops. If you really support the troops, which you need to at this point, we need to give them what is necessary for victory because withdrawal or failure will only allow extremists to expand their influence or risk bringing the war home.
