Thumbs Up: To Erik Anderson, who knows his business and thinks the future is in downtown Sandusky. Anderson has been a tailor and manager with the Diamond Co. men's store at Sandusky Mall. The company plans to close the store and Anderson plans to locate his own business at Water Street and Columbus Avenue in the Hubbard Building.

Thumbs Down: For Erie County Sheriff Terry Lyons, who pulled the plug on the county Drug Task Force -- and now he is asking the county for more money to hire a narcotics officer who also would work to clear the backlog of more than 600 arrest warrants that have not been served. The reversal of course is an indication that the sheriff lacks any concrete plans to address either problem adequately. Don't look for Band Aids to fix the problems, sheriff. Instead, come up with a real plan.

Thumbs Up: To U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur and the new set of muscles she can flex as a member of both the House Budget Committee and the House Appropriation Committee. We trust she'll help control the purse strings so federal dollars flow back to the heartland -- including our district -- in a way that benefits the greatest number of people, while keeping a close eye on the earmarks -- which is what we're calling pork these days.

Thumbs Down: To former Bellevue firefighter Sean Crosby, who city officials said acknowledged having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl. The city fired Crosby last month, but he has filed a grievance and wants his job back. Take a hard look at the situation, Mr. Crosby, and walk away.

Thumbs Up: To Agenda Bonner, Sarah Roberts and Teresa Castile, three women who made fitness resolutions for the New Year and agreed to share their progress through the year with readers of the Register's FIT magazine. It takes courage to open up and their courage likely will help many others.
