The Erie County Health Department has ordered new tests to make sure that water from Kelleys Island remains safe, said Robert England, director of Environmental Health for the department.

England said the action was prompted by Wednesday's news that water on the Canadian island of Pelee Island may be unsafe because of a harmful algal bloom.

England said that all of the water tests done so far this year suggest that Kelleys Island water is safe.

But he said he wants to make sure that groundwater on the island is not being affected by lake water and remains safe, so he has ordered more tests. He said he will monitor the island's water and issue new information to the public if the situation changes.
