Toledo issues water warning over algae toxin

Residents urged not to drink water and the city warned against boiling because it will only increase the toxin's concentration

Ohio's fourth-largest city has warned residents not to consume its water after tests revealed the presence of a toxin possibly related to algae on Lake Erie.

Toledo issued the warning early Saturday. It said tests at one treatment plant returned two sample readings for microsystin above the standard for consumption.

The city warned against boiling because it will only increase the toxin's concentration. The advisory covers city residents and those in Lucas County served by the city's water supply.

The city's advisory says Lake Erie may have been affected by a bloom of harmful algae that produces the toxin. Consuming the tainted water could result in vomiting, diarrhea and other problems.

Toledo is home to about 280,000 people. The city says more tests are being run.

Microcystin*. This is what the EPA SHOULD have been working on and preventing. It's a big mess and we might be next in line.

The Big Dog's back

The EPA has been gutted by the Repubs. This is what we get by not taxing the rich. They ruin our water supplies and don't want to pay a dime to fix it. Your grandchildren will love you for this.

deertracker

Totally agree! This is just a small piece of the puzzle soon to be destroyed by greed!

Darwin's choice

You two azzholes are incredibly ignorant. Marcy "do nothing" Kaptur, for how many decades, has let this situation worsen, now it's time to pay up! It's way past time for the current failure of a government to take care of the citizens here, not the rest of the planet's refuse. Dog, you should be extremely careful, in your current state of health, you would be at risk, and with you still owing for your hospital care,I'dlike you to pay up before you "check out"! Deertracker, start bottling up the mud puddles!

The Big Dog's back

Oh, so it's Marcy's fault?

Darwin's choice

Sure!
That makes as much sense as your idiotic comment!

But, look past my reference to the failures in the current administration!!

obama/failed

The Big Dog's back

So you're saying the EPA hasn't been gutted by the Repubs?

Darwin's choice

You're like a broken record.....

Donegan

I would say with the amount of fertilizer that comes out of her face she may be a large factor in this bloom.

Truth2u

HA HA HA!!What a hoot, I bet its Abraham Lincolns fault since he was the first Republican. Should have NEVER let a Republican be president, look at what He did, started a war to free a people who bites the hands who sent their sons to die for their freedom.

FedupIslander

Since when is the Clown Obama a Republican? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/20...

The Big Dog's back

The budget request does propose an increase to EPA's categorical grants, which are provided to states and tribes to aid them in conducting delegated activities under federal environmental law, including clean air monitoring and water pollution control. Categorical grants would be funded at a level of $1.1 billion in fiscal 2015 under the president's budget, an increase of $76 million above the fiscal 2014 enacted level.

That's why should read entire articles before publishing things and looking like a dope.

The Big Dog's back

Instead of taking direct shots at the environment – not even Tea Tendency zealots come out and say they're pro-pollution – Republicans are going after the EPA. It's a "job-killer". America's high unemployment rate is not the fault of the worldwide recession or the housing bubble or Wall Street hubris or two unfunded wars on top of George W Bush's silly tax cuts for the rich, it's those damned DC bunny-huggers. Representative Mike Simpson of Idaho insists, "overregulation from EPA is at the heart of our stalled economy"; his colleague, Rep Louie Gohmert of Texas, says, "Let EPA go the way of the dinosaurs that became fossil fuels."

Congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann doesn't want to wait for extinction, she advocates abolishing the EPA as soon as God puts the Tea Party in charge. She blames it for a host of anti-free market evils, from what she sees as an attempt to outlaw incandescent light bulbs (she countered with the "Lightbulb Freedom of Choice Act of 2011") to the "hoax" that is global climate change. Take no notice of what elitist scientists say, Bachmann knows better, assuring us that "CO2 is a natural byproduct of Nature."

sugar

Quit cutting and pasting. It makes you look ridiculous.
The EPA under Obama has been focused on harassing fossil fuel industries, Americans attempting to secure property or build homes in what they term endangered areas, power grabbing all over the country.
Surely doing nothing to protect Americans only harass.

knowitall

Any regulation the republicans are against. The EPA has had funding reduced by one third. This won't fix the things that effect our environment. The same environment that republicans get their air and water from. They need to wake up. The environment should not be a partisan issue.

Truth or Dare

Might be next in line? Uhm, the lake flows west to east, right?! I won't be waiting for a warning regarding Erie County. Not good news for anyone w/an already compromised immune system, the already sick, elderly and children. I'll be hitting the stores and buying bottled water for cooking and drinking asap!

ContraryAnn

More than Sandusky. the Rural Water companies draw from the Bay... all the way to Clyde and Huron, etc.

SassieSuzieSez

Only a matter of time, especially when undesirable/septic waste is dumped in the lake. If you can't even see 1 inch down under the water, you SURE don't want to drink or swim in it! This has been the case for many decades. Kicking the can eventually catches up with ya.

gene44870

Any city that has their water supply connected to Lake Erie should take note and step up tests to ensure water from Lake Erie is safe and not placing people at risk .
Something also tells me that no one should swim in any part of Lake Erie or consume anything connected to the lake till all cities can test and make sure the lake is safe. And have independent. test and confirm from out side the state of Ohio

ContraryAnn

Sandusky River flows into the Bay.... thus the bay flows into the Sandusky River.... for any who draw water from those. I think Clyde City customers prolly safe since their water comes from their two reservoirs.

Darkhorse

I hope Sandusky is on top of things with the water.

ContraryAnn

God-fearing God-loving Gay-hating Chik-fil-A in Toledo is giving ONE bottle of water to each person who passes by.

Good for them. Thanks for acknowledging them doing their part?

The Hero Zone

Yeah I don't know what to make of that. Is it some kind of snarky sarcasm at giving away free water regardless of religious affiliation/sexual preference, or is it just an awkwardly-conveyed compliment? How...dare...they?

Forward Looking

Well, just drive out into the country to see the Mills Creek watershed and you will see several fields that are fertilized with liquified manure and then there is a farm where the cows walk through the creek, with fresh manure produced daily all along the creek. This needs to be looked at and things like this are causing the problems we are seeing in Lake Erie.

knowitall

That is the root cause. We have know that for a while. But, as humans we don't give a crap till it is too late. We reap what we sow.

Forward Looking

Sure nothing will happen once again...

JoeSchmoe84

That's a complete lie. The amount of manure around is miniscule compared to the other wastes being dumped into the lake by other sources. Get a clue.

knowitall

Fertilizer Joe! Liquid manure is just one type. And then the pesticides and herbicides. That is your clue you uneducated ....... Farmland drainage into our water systems! Get a clue. On top of that there is the phosphorous from municipalities and industries. I have studied this stuff. Maybe you should too! Root cause is not the only cause, just the main cause.

JoeSchmoe84

I know that you know it all, just as your name implies, but nowhere in your original post did you reference any of the causes you now state. I also dispute the validity of your claim that manure is the "root" or "main" cause. Show some independent (not publicly funded) studies proving your stance, not insinuation and innuendo. Way to jump right to name calling, you.... no, I'm better than that.

knowitall

Joe.....First of all.....telling me to get a clue was not a nice thing to say....kind of condesending. That provoked my not nice comment. Sorry! I hope you accept my apology. Now, for the manure thing. In my mind I lumped the manure fertilizer, which contain phosphorus, with other phosphorus containing fertilizers in general in farmland runoff. I am guessing you are up on this stuff. Farmland ferrilizers running off during rain storms into streams, etc go into the lake. Everything I have read in environmental science literature has indicated that this runoff is the major cause of algae blooms, not the only cause but the major one. I imagine this extended explanation corroborates what you think. Had I expounded earlier I imagine you and I might have been in agreement. Maybe not though. I am sorry for the lack of specifics in my original post.

WeThePeople1965

ALL stores are completely out of water according to my husband. You either have it by now or you don't.

knowitall

People selling water for $20 per case. That is still cheaper than at the ball park!

Truth or Dare

You're right 1965! Good thing I have some stored up bottled water! Went to Krogers, not a case or gallon of water in sight! Unless of course you want high-priced Desanti flavored water.

knowitall

Beer is mostly water!

downthemiddle

Its not an epa issue... Most likely the cdc.. And they are preoccupied with mishandling the ebola thing badly.

Epa is only interested in levying fines... Who would be fined here?

WeThePeople1965

The EPA oversees all water treatment facilities. They're sending samples to Columbus and Cincinnati.

AJ Oliver

Hey Darwin - Why do you deny the obvious truth? The right wing does everything in its power to weaken environmental regs and gut the EPA. Unlike you, at least Rick Perry admits it - pledging the eliminate the EPA entirely. We don't need less regulation, we need much more.

Darwin's choice

Hey asshat, the employment prevention agency is out of control! Yet you obamabots look to use this as a us vs. them situation! You morons that condone anything this current government does need to get your heads out of you azzes!

Wjones44

Hail Darwin! I love you!

Darwin's choice

As a vet, you of all people should know the government doesn't help.....

An incredible stupid statement from you!

boatman8549

Farmers are exempt from EPA regulations. How can republicans be at fault when one of the major sources of pollution is EXEMPT from all those regulations that we need more of??

sugar

Because the Dept if Agriculture harassed them.

Wjones44

No worries, I have a fridge full of beer and a cabinet full of liquor.

KURTje

Truth? Naw. He'll deny soil erosion , algae bloom & more. Subsidized AgribuSINess (welfare) is loved by GOP types.

JoeSchmoe84

kurt, explain this subsidized welfare to all of us. Before the farm bill, the price of corn was $7 a bushel, and beans $18. After the bill, it's $3.50 and $9. Explain to me how farmers benefit from this type of "welfare". Farming operations are not the main cause of this problem with the lake and the algal bloom, it's just an excuse given to turn attention away from the real causes. The amount of over regulation of farming is astounding, and you should probably look into what you are saying, before claiming it to be true. While doing your research, you can also feel free to grow your own food. Of course, there are always those magic shelves at wal mart that sprout and grow their own food, so you can try that too.

knowitall

Joe....if you are a farmer, thanks for what you do. I have no problem with most farm subsidies. I don't know what regulations farmers are under. I would hope that any regulations are for the overall good of human kind and the environment. I know that some are probably not and do no good for the environment or the farmer. That said, I am interested to know how you know that runoff from farming is not the main cause of promoting algae blooms. Farmers have been able to produce more food quicker, faster, and better through the years as a result of research and progress in technology. There is usually some not so good fallout as a result of progress and we have usually been able to "fix" those things or at least mitigated their effects. So, why not mitigate runoff? How.....TBD.

Donegan

This is funny as hell. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) protects the ENVIRONMENT. The toxin comes from algae, Which to anyone who knows anything is natural and part of the environment.
The problem here is most around here have been taken off well water and forced to drink city water that is at the mercy of these blooms and the failure of the stations themselves to keep up with them. You can thank the local governments for not having the forethought to prepare for such natural blooms. Our infrastructure is falling apart but now most are off well water we are stuck relying on government. This ought to be a lesson.

The Big Dog's back

Ricin is natural. Want some? Arsenic is natural. Want some of that too? Your reference to algae is totally asinine.

Donegan

Its funny you said that. "EPA has set the arsenic standard for drinking water at .010 parts per million (10 parts per billion) to protect consumers served by public water systems from the effects of long-term, chronic exposure to arsenic." http://water.epa.gov/lawsregs/ru...
My well water had 0% arsenic in it. As for Ricin i do not like beans.
My reference is to your belief that the government will protect you from everything and that is asinine to think that the government is god.

WeThePeople1965

Does this help your understanding?

AJ Oliver

Contribution that anonymous cowards make to the discussion . .
".. asshat . . morons . . heads out of you azzes!"
Since the Register will not call you out, I will.

Darwin's choice

Well, when you're called out to be those, maybe you should look in the mirror!
"..we need more regulation and laws.." Are you for real? And you're a vet? If you can't see there is no demo/repub concern for the citizens of our country, you fit the above "contributions".

Call out that.

Democrats will drink beer this weekend. Republicans will drink old fashions. Independents will suck on their thumbs.

KURTje

Geez Joe pretty much have done that. Have perennial beds that include stinging nettle. Rabbits & once in a while a steer. Have my own water supply too. Ask Sunrise Co-op about their "low propane usage fee." Ohh......do not get paid NOT to plant either. And Joe , nitrates from Ag run-off has been noted since the 80's....lawn fertilizers don't help either. Again being raised around landed gentry it taught me much. (Then you had all the free cheese that was stored......)

boatman8549

RESTLESS...THIS independent is not sucking on his thumb...BUT if YOU want something to suck on...I'm sure it could be arranged!

Florence Nightingale

It is beyond annoying when the posters who do nothing but insult the opposite political party (and each other) clutter up the comments. I avoid reading the comments on obviously political articles for that reason - really wishing I didn't have to wade through that crap on this one.

pntbutterandjelly

This water emergency is just an example of what is coming in the future. My suggestion is that if you are anti-EPA...you should go to Toledo and drink all the tainted water you can consume. By doing so will give you an excuse as why your thought processes are so warped. Maybe too you should purchase land near a fracking sight and drink that water as well just to prove to everyone how safe it is and why we don't need agencies like the EPA. Hey...NO government oversight or regulations is a good thing! Right? (wrong)
Let's destroy and pollute the entire Earth in the name of profits and the right to do what we dam well please. (This is the Republican credo.)

Talk to those from the Celeryville area (near Willard Ohio). Ask them what happened to Honey Creek River. Years ago it was teeming with fish. Bullhead road runs parallel to Honey Creek. Wow a township road named after a fish. Hmm. Shades of Rachel Carson. Naw.. man has not done any wrong to the water or soil.

pntbutterandjelly

Maybe they can kill all that algae with that "tank" that Norwalk police bought. At least they could scare it!
NEWSBREAK: Terrorist algae monster is rising out of Lake Erie and attacking Toledo, Ohio. The Ohio National Guard is bringing all its resources to bear in an attempt to beat back this alien creature which is thought to have been given birth due to mankind's lack of caring. Fox News and Sarah Palin reports it is all a hoax and we should all go back to sleep or buy more guns to defend ourselves.
