The warm glow emanating from a glass window at 513 E. Perkins Ave. could become a portal into the world of dance.

Adults and children alike could become entranced watching the graceful moves on display only to find themselves stepping inside Black Tie Dance Studio to swirl and glide with owners Timothy and Annessia Nyman.

The couple have signed a three-year lease for the building that once housed A.W. Roberts and Sons.

It is poetic they have that window: both say they became spellbound watching dancers and wanting more than anything to be on the other side of the window.

“The great thing for us is the window front on a busy street,” Tim Nyman said. “We fell in love with dance first by seeing it.”

The studio now calls that high-traffic street home as it is snuggled between Cancer Services and the martial arts business, NAMI Sandusky.

It has, however, been a long road to find home.

Black Tie Dance Studio has operated out of a building on Tiffin Avenue, then in the Elks Club on Adams Street and the Knights of Columbus on Columbus Avenue.

“I am sure we lost people along the way, some people thought we had closed,” Nyman said.

They hope those long-lost students find their way back to Black Tie Studio, along with newcomers.

The new digs allow for even more dance classes with two rooms available for simultaneous instruction, such as ballroom in one class, Latin dance class in the next room.

There will be even more dance class offerings, such as adult ballet and stretch taught by Maryann Snider.

Kirsi Hemphill will be teaching Zumba and Zumbini (a Zumba class for a parent and a child up to three-years old) classes.

Yoga and fitness training classes are also planned by instructors Jamie Bishop And Phil Barone.

The space is also handicapped accessible, something that is important to Nyman, who has taught competitive wheelchair dancing.
