50 years ago, 1964: Sen. Barry Goldwater, front-running candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, said the party faced "a tough job in the race against President Johnson" - but added, "This is going to be a Republican year."

25 years ago, 1989: Mel Blanc, whose incredible ability to create voices that gave life to such cartoons characters as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig, was remembered as a one-of-a-kind actor. Blanc's famous voice was silenced when he died of heart disease at the age of 81, in Los Angeles.

10 years ago, 2004: To the delight of Philadelphia school officials, a multi-million-dollar treasure trove of 19th- and 20th-century art was discovered in the basement, boiler room, closets and hallways of a cash-strapped public school. The artworks - 1,200 in all - included paintings, sketches, and murals.
