Thumbs DOWN to thoughts of year-round school just for the sake of year-round school. We get that there are some programs that run during summer and it's great there are students who seek the advantage in them and take that advantage -- but if it's just about stuffing everyone into classrooms without any thought as to what content will fill those extra school days, then mark us down absent.

Thumbs UP to Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton and Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk for jumping into the modern age of medical records, with an electronic system that makes patient information available when and where it's needed without having to schlep paperwork around (and fill it out again and again and again ... ) The sheer inertia of existing methods has kept American hospitals lagging in medical information technology and it took a leap of faith, we think, to shuck that inertia. We think it will pay off, both in hospital efficiency and in quality of patient care.

Thumbs DOWN to the under-the-radar addition of late fees to license and registration renewals in Ohio -- but thumbs UP to local legislator Terry Boose, R-Norwalk, for standing up and crying foul -- and working to get those fees shot down. Next time there's a revenue-enhancing idea, Columbus, put it out in the open.
