The Boys & Girls Club of Erie County has received multiple reports in recent days of a group trying to scam local residents by claiming to represent the organization.

Adults and children are canvassing local neighborhoods pretending to be from the club and asking for donations.

This group is in no way affiliated with the Boys and Girls Club of Erie County. The Club never allows children in their program to solicit money.

“We never send kids out into the community as part of any fundraiser,” said Craig Wood, Board President of the Boys & Girls Club of Erie County.  “Part of our responsibility is teaching them to be safe in their community. Sending them out to ask for money contradicts that purpose.”

Come On Sandusky

Thats horrible to use a great organization in our community to get money for your own personal gain. I hope no one has given money unknowlingly in this scam and they find the people who are running it!

I have 'receipts'... of this transaction... the paperwork looked legit, even had a cancellation sheet if I so chose to do so... I will consult them when I get home. I'll get online and do some digging!

I was visited by a gentleman last week while I was out front doing yard work. He indicated that he worked for a program for 'second chances', and they weren't taking donations per say, but they were selling magazines. We ordered a subscription to a magazine, and then ordered three magazines to be anonymously donated to children in need. I don't know if this is the same thing, but I would hate to think that someone preyed on our hearts when it comes to children in need. We were told that the magazines would be delivered to children in need, and if we wanted the magazines to stay within our community, to just provide a zip code and leave the address blank, and then it would be anonymously donated...

Did anyone else experience this?  Did I get scammed for $100.00 worth of magazines for 'needy kids', and will I ever receive my subscription of Maxim?

I guess if it was a scam, I'll learn from this mistake.

P.S.  He never said it was specific to Erie county Girls and Boys club, he did mention 'a boys and girls club' but it was not aimed at Erie County..
