John Madden, 67, was pronounced dead at the crash scene Tuesday. Madden was driving a 2009 Kia Sportage that was struck from behind by a tractortrailer, then pushed into the back of a second tractortrailer, troopers stated in a release.

A 2011 Freightliner was headed east on the turnpike when at about 3:15 p.m., near the U.S. 280 interchange, it struck theback of Madden’s vehicle, which was stopped in traffic. The collision pushed Madden’s vehicle into the back of a 2014 Freightliner, which was also stopped in traffic, troopers said.

The driver of the 2011 tractor-trailer — Michael French Jr., 39, of Wisconsin — and the driver of the 2014 tractor-trailer — Randolph Clarke, 58, of Georgia — were not injured in the crash. Alcohol was not a suspected factor, troopers said.

The crash closed the eastbound lanes of the Turnpike for about 30 minutes. Lake Township firefighters and paramedics and Turnpike crews assisted at the scene.
