Dr. Information

Here is a woman being honored solely on her color and not here work, which has been all over the local media as being incompetent and pathetic.

Way to honor laziness.

margaritaville88

Agreed!! To be rewarded for being of color and lazy is PATHETIC!!!!!!

DGMutley

Dr. Information,

Whether Ms. Ard will be known as a roaring success as a city manager is yet to be known. For sure she is not incompetent. She for sure is not pathetic. And, most definitely she is not lazy.

Dr. Information

Yup, you are right. When is the last time a city manager was given a last chance shot at doing her job right by her bosses? Thanks for proving my point.

Brick Hamland

Shouldn't they fire her first and then celebrate that she is history...

deertracker

She's not being honored for her work!

Dr. Information

They are honoring her for her position and color both of which have nothing to do with her incompetence.

deertracker

What exactly is "her position of color"?

ladydye_5

So many are trying to get her fired yet they are HONORING her for her COLOR???? WOW.

deertracker

Read the article PLEASE! She's been Black her entire life. She's being honored for her accomplishments as a Black woman. WOW! Congratulations Ms. Ard. Your journey is note worthy.

samiam

Noteworthy maybe but not in a good way!

whattheBucks

Her journey needs to continue !

DGMutley

ladydye_5,

The jury is still out on her success as a city manager here in Sandusky. Black History Month is a celebration of Black History. She definitely is a part of that history here in Sandusky.

I hope she does become a successful city manager for Sandusky. To hope otherwise is kind of counterproductive.

mimi's word

With her record, I feel that she should not be honored for any reason. I also feel she is doing a diservice to her color and gender by her actions. People want it both ways...treat me equally but not when it comes to color ot gender.

deertracker

You also think it's okay for dogs to kill babies. Go lay down!

SamAdams

I don't care if the City Manager is male, female, black, white, green, or purple. I care if the City Manager is doing the job. Ard isn't.

Meanwhile, most of us not only prefer to be color blind, but ARE color blind, and the woman gets recognized because she happens to be black. Wow. Way to reinforce the notion that color DOES matter! In this case apparently it's all that does. She sure can't be recognized for job performance!

santown419

Sam to say you are colorblind is bs. You always seem to have something to say when it comes to give anybody black any props. Plus you worship and love to quote false news and Limbaugh who had proven to hate blacks. You come on here and try to make yourself look good but constantly your posts prove different.

SamAdams

The only time I have something to say about somebody given props is when they're undeserved. And that includes those who, like Ard, are given props BECAUSE they're black.

deertracker

In Black America it is a major accomplishment just to get the job if you are a black woman! Duh? Don't pretend you don't know that! SMDH!!!!

rbenn

Your race card has expired please go to the end of the line. So tired of hearing this crap from liberals.

santown419

Wheres the race card.

deertracker

That's rbenns standby response whenever the word black is mentioned.

rbenn

No just tired of hearing all this feel sorry for me im black crap, get over it already. You don't reward poor job performance just because someone is of color, its lame and actually makes you look bad.

deertracker

No one is asking for your sympathy. Keep it. She is not being rewarded for her job performance. Pay attention!

rbenn

that's the problem moron, what about that don't you get

deertracker

Not my fault you don't comprehend well! Read the article over very slowly!

mimi's word

Just because she is a black woman does not mean she should be praised...if she were a black woman doing the job she was hired for then i would love to give her all the praise in the world.

santown419

Its amazing that all these people have a problem with anything concerning black peoples accomplishments but everyday we see white people getting recognized for things they shouldn't. Call it is everyone of you don't want blacks to get any notice stay quite and that will be it.

Dr. Information

So is she or is she not being awarded for her job performance or is it just a color thing? If its job performance, then this award is a joke, just like she is. If it is a color thing, why not recognize the black guy down the road who pays his child support and goes to work everyday?

She's a failure at her job and yet people want to honor her. Lol. Joke is on you.

DickTracey

Wow, you people are really hardcore. It is also very mean, but mostly hypocritical !

Obama was elected TWICE for being the color he is! Not for his accomplishments or the work he's done!

Black people, that NEVER voted in their lives, registered to vote in droves and bus loads.

Now because the same exact thing is happening at a local level, you hop on your free Obama phone to blog about it!

"Way to honor laziness"? Obama has played golf and had more vacations than all of us commenters put together!!

deertracker

WRONG! He got elected twice because he was the best choice. If Romney had won would it be because he is white? Did you have a problem with W spending a third of his presidency in Texas? NEXT!

DickTracey

The majority of newly registered voters, could not even read or write, let alone know who was the better choice!

The only reason they registered ( besides the freebies they got) to vote, was to vote for color!

And yes, if Romney went around and picked up bus loads of white trash that were unregistered and gave them ice cream and Red Bull to vote for him, things may have been different.

JMOP's picture
JMOP

Don't forget about voter intimidation. What's the opposite of the Black Panthers for the whitey's?

deertracker

The KKK!

JMOP's picture
JMOP

I respectfully disagree. The KKK has hidden identity, while the Black Panthers don't.
Hell's Angels is what I was thinking of. It slipped my mind. Thanks for the help.

deertracker

Hell's Angels don't like Blacks but they don't seek them out to do harm. Black Panthers did not seek out whites to do harm.

mimi's word

I do believe you are wrong about black panthers seeking out whites to do harm...
National Field Marshal for the New Black Panthers King Samir Shabazz who was caught on video tape allegedly intimidating voters in Philadelphia in 08 is now in charge of the New Black Panthers plan to create inner city militaries that would go into nurseries and kill white babies and murder white people n the street

http://www.breitbart.com/Breitba...

And before you want to bring up the KKK I am probably one of the few people that actually has ever dealt with an incident with the KKK around here where a cross was burnt in my parents yard after my parents rented a home to a white lady and her mixed teen daughters. So I do know a little of both sides...

deertracker

breitbart.com REALLY? You don't know nearly as much as you think you know. You do realize that just because it is on the net doesn't make it true? The PANTHERS WERE THERE TO STOP THE INTIMIDATION OF BLACK VOTERS.

mimi's word

I do know quite a bit thank you...I know what it is like to be discriminated against. I know the fear the KKK instills. I also know the hatres and name calling from black p-eople who think you are trash. The Panters are not any better than there counter part.

deertracker

You are so wrong. I guess Blacks are supposed to keep turning the other cheek. No thanks!

Dr. Information

So the black panthers were at the voting booths with their garb on with nightsticks to protect the black people from voter intimidation? Wow how unintelligently grand. Please stay in Sandusky where all those smart people live.

deertracker

Did anyone get hurt? Were any white people unable to vote? Were any white people forced to vote a certain way? I rest my case! NEXT!

Dr. Information

So someone has to get hurt for it to be intimidation? You fail again. Google and websters dictionary would be your friend.

deertracker

Very appropriate name DICK!

jacksonbrowne

Like this comment Dick Tracey!

reader

Congratulations, Ms. Ard.

samiam

HA HA HA HA...this is a joke, right?

Whatever happened about ignoring color and being more concerned with character and integrity?

deertracker

Tell us about her character and integrity!

DGMutley

samiam,

She has both character and integrity. She would have never be considered for the job if she didn't. Actually, those traits sometimes interfere with managers getting the job done.

samiam

I never said she didn't. I was merely flabbergasted that she would be honored for being black. Why not one of the first black assistant principals at the city schools or th first black superintendent? To be truthful, I didn't even know until this article came out that she is black! From the same pictureof her that is always used by SR, I just always thought she had an olive complexion. Oh well, I had a good laugh from this article.

deertracker

You thought she was white. Admit it!

huronguy

Best choice lmao. Oh because Obama had so much prior experience? What a joke. If it wasn't for affirmative action most blacks wouldn't have jobs not because of racism but because the white man will always be better qualified. Let's face it if a black person isn't singing, dancing or throwing a ball there will always be a white person more qualified. We are tired of black folks getting freebies for crying! Work for it!
How or why did miss Ard get hired anyways?

JMOP's picture
JMOP

Not always. I would be the happiest person in the planet if Dr. Carson would become president. After all, politics isn't brain surgery.

deertracker

Huronguy, you seriously have an inferiority complex. Are you short?

Dr. Information

ah, name calling. 1st sign of insecurity.

OH-IO

Here we go again. White people trying to dictate what Black people can do for Black History Month. If a Irish official is a keynote speaker at a St.Patrick's Day event; it's ok. If a Jewish person is honored for their heritage at Hanukkah it's fine. It's not for other ethnicities to dictate a cultural event. Slavery is over so get it over it.

deertracker

Agreed!

mimi's word

How about any of the other hard working black people in the city who actually try to better the city and do their job and still struggle and work and perserve through??? I would be more than happy to support them. I just think she is the wrong choice for this award. She will be named through history as the first woman to be in that position but i would like to read about the first woman who did the job.

deertracker

THIS IS NOT ABOUT HER JOB PERFORMANCE! Geez!

slightthroat212

@deertracker...how right you are, but some just don't get that any more than they get that black people in February honor their forefathers with Black History Month because they can. It's their right to do so. It isn't about slavery or anything like that....its honoring those who gave things to betterment or were firsts and happened to be black. Geeze. Not a hard concept to understand but I see prejudice is alive and well here like so many places. Some people just don't get it. I do and I am white.

mimi's word

So honoring someone who does do a great job instead of some one who has a poor record I think would better represent the black community then someone who isn't supported for anything other than her color. I am sorry if this was a story about women in history I would not want her listed other than she was the first to hold the job. no award. I hear her award should be getting paid for a job she doesn't do. I understand it is not about her performance but the representation is. The way she shows up for meetings she probably won't even show.

Babo

Thank you for your insight and placing the issue in terms anybody should be able to understand. If a social or political organization wants to recognize one of their own, who are any of us to judge their choice?

I hope that Ms. Ard seizes the platform she has been given to spell out her vision for Sandusky before a friendly audience. She could mobilize the black community, women, and safety forces/city workers to support an admissions tax increase to 8% coupled with an income tax decrease. Such an approach would raise revenues to improve infrastructure while attracting new businesses, residents, and possibly expand the city's borders to foster economic development because of the lower tax rate for residents and businesses.

She could point out how the attacks on her have been orchestrated by the multi generational self serving greedy power structure in Sandusky that never wants to see anybody other than members of their "GOB club" prosper, while asking everyone else to fund their prosperity through tax abatement, cost shifting, and back room deals.

Left Sandtown

Well if I needed any DARTS,I know where I was going tonight.

pavedparadise

"""In addition to being the first black Sandusky city manager, Ard is the first female to hold the position."""

Nowhere in the article does it say Ard is being honored as "City Manager of the Year".

OSUBuckeye59

I believe you've very well highlighted the conflict with the award: Ms. Ard is being honored because of her race and gender while at the same time her performance in the position is so lacking to the point she is being required to work through a short term corrective action plan with the real possibility of her receiving this award in February and receiving a termination notice in March.

Kottage Kat

I am sure Sandusky has equally deserving women of colour.
To honor one of those local women would be far more impressive and logical.
Not being from Sandusky do not know anyone qualified. Gotta be one out there.

DickTracey

Stella Hunter Anderson
Peggy Hollies Mayo
Barbara Johnson
Gaye Harris Miles
Diedre Cole

Ned Mandingo

Isn't she the same person that is incompetent at her job? Why would anyone honor her, regardless of her skin.

SamAdams

Because, contrary to what certain groups would suggest, skin color apparently DOES matter. In fact, it matters SO much that some should be shamed for it though they don't deserve to be, while others should be HONORED for it though they don't deserve to be.

deertracker

Skin color definitely matters when interviewing for a job.

Dr. Information

Yup because if you are black, you get positions based on color and not being the best qualified.

deertracker

No if you are Black, the application goes in the trash as soon as you leave! Get it right!

mimi's word

Is that why you are on here so much...no job cause of your color???

SamAdams

Here's a LEGITIMATE nominee: Luvada Wilson. She fits the only apparent criteria seeing as how she's both black and a female. Where she differs, however, is that she actually seems to understand her job description and is performing at a high level.

Darwin's choice

^^ Agree ^^

deertracker

She's not the first black female to hold that job. For the last time Sham, this is not about job performance!!!!!!!

SamAdams

No, she isn't. In fact, she's still cleaning up from the poor performance of the previous black female occupant.

Now, pay careful attention deertracker: We all KNOW this isn't about job performance (obviously)! It's ABOUT BEING BLACK. And that's ALL it's about. And THAT'S what many of us find objectionable.

deertracker

Why do you object? Are you black? Did you hire Ms. Ard? Are YOU giving her an award? MYOB if you find it "objectionable".

SamAdams

If you care what color I am, then you're a racist. If you DON'T care what color somebody is, then what difference does their color make?

Here's what's objectionable (since it's clear somebody has to spell it out for you): Black History Month is supposed to show everybody that black men and women have contributed many things to our country and that they should be remembered for those achievements. It's very much an "equalizer" of sorts, showing that white people aren't the only ones who do important things. That's fair. That's reasonable. But pretending Ard is anything special solely because she's black is like saying George Washington only went down in history because he was white.

George Washington (the Revolutionary War general and the first President) WAS important, and George Washington Carver (the scientist, inventor, and teacher) was ALSO important. That's true because of what they DID, not how they looked. What has Ard done BESIDES be born black (something for which she bears no credit OR blame)?

Most of us, including a consensus of City Commissioners, consider Ard a dismal failure as City Manager. Are we giving out awards for LACK of contributions now? Or again, are we honoring people based entirely on the notion that skin color makes somebody better or worse than anybody else? THAT, deertracker, is TRULY racism!

deertracker

As usual you are completely clueless!

Dr. Information

Add usual deer, you post the same responses when faced with intellectual paragraphs.

Julie R.

@SamAdams: Just out of curiosity, how do you know so much about the Clerk of Court's office?

Fireside

I'm so confused....she IS doing a wonderful job as city manager, Isn't she? She got a glowing review last year. Smith, Grohe, Farrar, Brown and Hamilton signed it. I believe them, she did exactly as they instructed her. She takes her direction from the commission.

thinkagain's picture
thinkagain

WOW!

An innocuous celebration of black history and the vitriolic comments begin. This thread reads like the minutes to a Klan meeting.

mikeylikesit

sorry bob..

Ned Mandingo

i can't wait till this month is over.

Teeter's picture
Teeter

This is hilariously sad that something so meaningful is being used in this way to support someone that bilks the public of an undeserved salary for doing nothing....amazing but not surprising all considered. It's embarrassing and demeaning, especially to others who have accomplished so much for so long.

Diedre Cole

Julie R.

The way I understand this she was chosen not only because she's the first black person to hold the title of Sandusky city manager, she's also the first female to hold the position, so I really fail to see why that would be embarrassing & demeaning.

As an afterthought, the way Sandusky goes through city managers, I think she should be awarded for taking the job to begin with!

deertracker

Sour grapes Diedre?

DGMutley

Yeah, I was kind of thinking that too. Sorry Diedre.

Babo

Hey Ms. Cole should not feel left out. She made Dick Tracey's list of worthy nominees!

Dr. Information

If this is all they could come up with to honor, all I can say is wow. There isn't a more qualified black person who is actually doing their job to honor in Sandusky. I saw a black man on the grounds clean up crew at Cedar Point last year. Way more qualified.

Julie R.

Geez, all these derogatory comments just because Ms. Ard was honored as part of Black History Month for being the first black Sandusky city manager? Were there this many derogatory comments when Kevin Baxter was chosen "Prosecutor of the Year?"

IrishEyes

Geez, no matter what the topic is, Julie will find a way to bring in her vendetta against Baxter.

Babo

LOL, that's exactly right Julie! This is all about a social organization choosing to honor one of their own for their own reasons. It's identical to the Prosecutor's association selecting winners of their annual award for political reasons.

Come on.. Kevin Baxter Prosecutor of the Year AFTER the AG admits they had reliable evidence of his illegal drug abuse for years and he lost a libel case to the SR over the issue. That was all about trying to restore his tattered reputation. Then there was the award to former Cuyahoga County prosecutor Bill Mason AFTER the Feds convicted over 40 officials, LEO's and lawyers for public corruption under Bill's nose!

OH-IO

The fact that African Americans have to debate, argue or defend a NON VIOLENT celebration is the exact reason why there is still a need for black history month. HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH! I'm also looking forward to St. Patrick's Day next! :-)

JohnDorian12

Honored for what???? She is so arrogant that she doesn't feel she needs to do the duties she is required to do, just because SHE doesn't feel they're important. She makes major financial decisions without consulting her bosses....she has put that city into such financial ruin that firefighters must now lose their jobs...and she's being honored???? Wow she has really set the bar low, way to go Nicole....your only quality is your skin color

Julie R.

Nicole Ard put the city of Sandusky into financial ruin? Give me a break.

BTW, did you Sanduskians ever find out how much the rent-a-judges & Cleveland attorneys made off of the fixed Nuesse fiasco?

deertracker

Anyone?????? I want to know too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Information

Do your own homework and stop asking others to do it for you. Lazy.

Julie R.

Duh ..... how can anybody do their homework when the records are being concealed? Didn't they say it was nobody's business what the Sandusky taxpayers ended up paying for that sham firing of the female police chief?

OSUBuckeye59

Did Ms. Ard attend the event and receive the award in person? Did she speak at all other than saying "Thank You"?

I'm surprised the Sandusky Register did not post an online story plus a picture or even a video of Ms. Ard receiving the award.

OSUBuckeye59

After conducting a web search, I found much data supporting what I believe most already know, namely the percentage of Black/African Americans, male or female, in positions of management is low. In this context, Ms. Ard receiving an award for being not only the first Black/African American Sandusky City Manager, but also the first Female to hold the position, would indeed be an appropriate and worthy honor.

What raised an eyebrow for me when I read of Ms. Ard being awarded for her achievement is her performance in the role of City Manager since being hired has been anything but stellar. I understand those who believe it's entirely appropriate for Ms. Ard to receive the award. As for me, at this time I just can't separate Ms. Ard's award for achievement from her subsequent performance.

To those who chose to award Ms. Ard: Why do so now when a month from now Ms. Ard may be terminated due to poor performance in the role of City Manager?

DGMutley

The rating of her performance as City Manager is pretty much subjective. See Fireside's post in this thread.

The city manager serves at the pleasure of the City Commission. The City Commission's performance over the last couple years has left much to be desired. It's hardly fair to dump all their inadequacies at her doorstep.

Just a Girl

She has more than enough inadequacy all on her own. Yes, I'm disappointed in commissioners Smith and Hamilton, who I thought would do so well. I'm disappointed that Diedre Cole who cares so much, didn't complete her paperwork correctly to get her name on the ballot. But Ard's problem is her job performance, not the commissioners, except that they've allowed her to stay so long. She looked good on paper and I was excited when she was hired, after the disasters of Rick Finn, Matt Kline, etc. But it's been downhill from there.

Brick Hamland

If you had to list the top 5 people in sandusky to be honored for black history month, who would they be?

Just a Girl

1. Yvette Shores-Boy Scout scoutmaster
2. Luvada Wilson, Clerk of Courts
3. Tracy Shoemo, Pastor
4. El Da'Sheon Nix, Community Organizer
5. Naomi Twine, City Commissioner
What do they have in common? They get things done!
