Dakota Schaffer, 17, remains at The University of Toledo Medical Center in critical condition, said Sgt. Angel Burgos, of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Fremont post.

A nurse at the University of Toledo Medical Center confirmed there has been no change in the teen’s condition.

Dakota was the passenger in a 2001 Ford Focus driven by his friend, Garrett Holmes, 16, who died in the crash. The car drove off the left side of the road on Ohio 18, just southwest of Bellevue, and into a ditch, continuing on before striking a barn, landscaping rocks and a tree.

The teens were a quarter of a mile from Garrett’s home, family members said.

Garrett was pronounced dead at the scene. Dakota was taken to The Bellevue Hospital and then to The University of Toledo Medical Center, where he has remained since.

Both boys had been working Sunday night when Garrett picked up Dakota, and they were headed to Garrett’s home. They were both wearing seat belts, and alcohol is not considered a factor, troopers said.

Burgos said there has been no update on a possible cause.
