Dec 23, 2013

A 16-year-old Bellevue boy was killed and a 17-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries when their car veered off the roadway and struck a barn off state Route 18 just outside of Bellevue.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the accident occurred at about 9:21 p.m. Sunday.

Garrett Holmes, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Patrol said.

The passenger in the car, Dakota Schaffer, 17, also of Bellevue, was taken to Bellevue Hospital and later to the University of Toledo Medical Center.

Holmes was driving a 2001 Ford Focus traveling southwest on Route 18, just southwest of Bellevue. The vehicle drove off the left side of the road striking and traveling through a ditch and subsequently striking a barn, landscape rocks, and a tree.

Both occupants were wearing seatbelts and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, the Patrol said. The accident remains under investigation.

My heart breaks for both familys...prayers to all :-(

May God lift up these families and give them the strength to get through this holiday season. My heart goes out to all involved.

How awful for both families. My heart goes out to both of them.

This is so very, very sad.

Certainly not want any family wants to deal with at Christmas. So sad for all involved.

It is sad to hear of this any time of year but so close to Christmas just is so sad. Just happy that the Register could not take pictures of this one.
