A Willard man was flown by medical helicopter to Cleveland after a Tuesday morning crash on Ohio 61.

Leslie Smith, 69, was driving a 2003 Dodge Caravan west on Townline Road 12, when the van failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Ohio 61 and went into the path of a southbound tractor trailer.

The R&L 2002 MAC Tractor Trailer, driven by Ocal Steward, 61, of Greenwich, struck the van and forced it off the road, where it came to a stop in a field.

Smith was trapped inside the van, until Willard firefighters extracted him and he was taken by medical helicopter to Cleveland MetroHealth Center.

Steward, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured in the crash, but his truck was towed from the scene.

Smith was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening.
