Obama invokes Thanksgiving spirit on immigration

President says he's willing to work with House Republicans who want to break issue into pieces

President Barack Obama invoked the Thanksgiving spirit Monday in search of an immigration deal with Congress, making a pitch for a legislative priority amid a West Coast fundraising swing.

The Democratic-controlled Senate has passed a comprehensive bill that includes border security and a path to citizenship for millions of immigrants illegally in the United States. Obama prefers that approach but says he's willing to go along with House Republicans who want to break immigration reform into pieces.

"It's Thanksgiving. We can carve that bill into multiple pieces," Obama said to laughter at the Betty Ann Ong Chinese Recreation Center in the Chinatown neighborhood.

Obama said a quarter of the foreign-born population in the United States in 2011 came from Asian countries, and more than a million of the 11 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally are from Asia.

Later, Obama was interrupted by a heckler standing on the stage behind him who shouted at the president to stop deportations that split up families. Obama says he needs Congress to change the law to have that power. When security tried to remove the demonstrator from the event, Obama said he could stay and that they share the same goal.

"It won't be as easy as just shouting. It requires us lobbying," Obama said.

Facing opposition from many rank-and-file Republicans, House GOP leaders don't plan to hold any votes on immigration during what remains of this year.

At the San Francisco Jazz Center hours later, Obama reflected in personal terms about his own family's struggles as he continued a fundraising swing he started the night before in Seattle.

He said he starts each morning thinking about how he found himself in public service in the first place: the difficulties for his grandmother, who as a woman hit a glass ceiling in her career; his mother, who relied on scholarships as a single mom; and his wife's father, a blue-collar worker who never went to college. Obama said he thinks about his family's trajectory and what the U.S. has done for his family.

"I travel around the country and I see that story repeated over and over again," Obama said, adding that he feels privileged to be president "because in some small measure every single day I have an opportunity to advance that story."

After the pair of fundraisers in San Francisco on Monday, Obama was headed to Los Angeles to raise money for House and Senate Democrats. One event will be held at the home of Earvin "Magic" Johnson, the former NBA star and now co-owner of baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers.

Re: "difficulties for his grandmother, who as a woman hit a glass ceiling in her career,"

Madelyn Dunham started working for the Bank of Hawaii in 1960. In 1970 and without a college degree she became a VP.

Perhaps it was raising little Barry that helped to put a crimp in her career?

Nice cherry picking there boy!

There you go again

Obama may SAY he is willing to work with Repubs but when it comes down to it all he spews is negativism toward them. Another campaign promise broken...

I say DOWN with the GOP!

Really are you ...

"GOP don't plan to hold any votes on immigration during what remains of this year.". This comes as no surprise, because the GOP likes to avoid the tough issues. If I went to work today, went on break, and didn't come back until that tough part we were running was done. I would receive some type of discipline and possibly the threat of being fired.

Just vote on it! But why would we have this illegal immigration problem in the first place? Negotiate. Our jobs are leaving to the countries that has the biggest influx of illegals into the US. Make them pay their medical, pay into Social Security, and taxes. Why should they have better being its of being in the US than the average joe? If they leveled the playing field, and made them pay like the middle class American, we probably wouldn't have an illegal problem in the first place.

Darwin's choice

"If you like your health-care insurance, you can keep it. Period"

Why believe anything that this man says?

Anything to shine that glaring spotlight away from the Obama-care LIES!!

Enforce the laws in place already, and there wouldn't be any "illegals"!!!

But, then the democrats would lose a large voting base.....

Do you like your healthcare insurance? Has anyone CANCELLED your policy? Would you prefer a better plan? This President has deported more "illegals" than any other President? What say you?

Darwin's choice

"What say you"??? Is that ghetto for "what am I saying"? And, this president has allowed more illegals into this country than any other! Why do you democrats believe in non-enforcement of the current laws? Need those votes, eh?

Darwin's choice

Read and learn....if possible!

This is totally on Obama, his arrogance.

Fellow Patriot,

I need your help.

Let me lay it out for you. I continue to be under attack by Barack Obama's federal government.

Two years ago, the Obama Justice Department sued me for so-called "civil rights" violations which turned out to be purely politically motivated, based on the timing of their lawsuit. Filed just months before the election, it was a blatant attempt on their part to influence my re-election as Sheriff.

But I won with your support.

Then, just two months after I was re-elected after being targeted by the media and millions of dollars in outside special interest groups, a recall campaign was launched against me.

But I beat them with your support.

Then, in the middle of the recall effort a federal judge claimed that my office engaged in racial profiling while we were enforcing illegal immigration laws. My office was following the guidelines that were laid out to us by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Yet, I'm the one they pin the "racial profiling" label on.

That same judge has now ordered a "federal monitor" to oversee the actions of my office. This is an egregious attempt by the federal government to take over my office and keep me from doing the job I was elected to do.

Shortly after that judge's ruling, another federal judge ruled that we can no longer detain illegal immigrants that pay a coyote, or professional smuggler, to sneak them across our borders! You see, Arizona passed a law years ago that made human smuggling a crime. Yet, in every other instance, paying someone to break the law for you means that you too are guilty of a crime. But now, a federal judge is saying local law enforcement has no power to detain these criminals.

Do you see a pattern here? The federal government is going out of their way to tie the hands of my office and my deputies to enforce the law - and take over the office of a constitutionally elected Sheriff! This is unacceptable and it is why we are appealing these rulings. We'll go all the way to the Supreme Court if we have to. This aggression will not stand.

But you know how pervasive and aggressive the federal government can be, especially under Barack Obama's Justice Department.

Maricopa County in Arizonahas been the gateway into the United States for illegal immigrants, human smuggling, drug-trafficking and illegal weapons for years now. But I'm the bad guy for trying to stop it?

That's why I need your immediate support today. Will you stand with me by following this link and making an instant online contribution of $25, $50, $100 or more?

I am sure this is not the end of it. They'll keep coming after me until I completely surrender. That's not going to happen. I'm going to continue doing the job I was elected to do, and the job the people want me to do.

I've spent 50 years in law enforcement, including as a top official with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration around the world, and 21 years as Sheriff. I'm not about to back down to a bunch of political threats from a federal government that is simply out of control.

Between the federal government harassing me, radical activists protesting and burning me in effigy, and the numerous death threats against me and my family, it would be easy to surrender in this fight, retire from office and go away. But I won't do that.

I'm going to keep fighting for what I know is right. I took an oath to protect and defend the US Constitution and I will keep that oath until my last breath.

But I need your help. You've been such a strong supporter that I must ask for your help again.

Will you show your immediate support and stand with me by following this link and making an instant online contribution of $25, $50, $100 or more?

I have already filed the necessary paperwork to run for another term - much to the angst and consternation of my political opponents. They would just rather see me worn down and defeated but they have no idea how much more fight I have left in me.

But I cannot do it alone.

Will you please make a contribution to "Elect Sheriff Joe Arpaio" today? Your help and support will give me the resources I need to stand and fight against these groups that wish to see me go away.

And, a new law was recently passed here in Arizona that raises the contribution limits for my campaign. Those new limits are now $5,000 per person, which covers the primary and general election cycles. I know that's a lot, so any amount you can give today, $500, $250, $100, $50 or even $35, is greatly appreciated.

Please click here to make a contribution today. I would be forever grateful if you would continue supporting my efforts and send a signal to my political opponents that I'm not done fighting just yet!

Thank you for everything you have done. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

P.S. Please don't delete this email. It's clear there is a pattern here that shows the federal government is coming after me. They don't want me to expose their hypocrisy in enforcing illegal immigration laws and it doesn't fit their political agenda. I'm up against the most powerful government in the world and I need your help today! Thank you.

It's REALLY about wealth redistribution. Shoosh!

"Don’t Dare Call the Health Law ‘Redistribution’":

“Americans want a fair and fixed insurance market,” said Jonathan Gruber, a health economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who advised Mr. Obama’s team as it designed the law. “You cannot have that without some redistribution away from a small number of people.” So EXACTLY who gets the wealth? The medical personnel or the patient?

Re: "So EXACTLY who gets the wealth?"

Employer and union trust health care insurance plans pay with before tax (deductible) dollars.

Individuals pay with after-tax (non-deductible) dollars for their health insurance.

FAIR? I don't think so.

Deport them now! The jobs they leave behind would erode our unemployment!

There's a field somewhere waiting on your services! Bye bye!

I have a job. Pretty simple deerpoop, either people on unemployment and snap cards work those jobs or bye bye to their benies. Even a simple mind like yours should be able to understand that.

Most people that receive "benies" already work. Can your simple mine understand that?

And how many receiving unemployment work?? You are not a genius.

You are a genius? Who knew? What exactly is "unemployment work"? A JOB perhaps?

In your previous post you say "Most people that receive "benies" already work" and my response is "how many receiving unemployment work". So let me walk you through this a little more. H o w m a n y p e o p l e t h a t r e c e i v e u n e m p l o y m e n t b e n i e s a r e a c t u a l l y w o r k i n g ? Slow enough for you?

WTH does that have to do with immigration? Stay on topic slowmikesee!

Darwin's choice

shizzle, is that you? You sound alike....

If you read my original post and learn how to comprehend then you will see how this relates to illegal immigrants.

You can't even do that!

Re: "Obama was interrupted by a heckler standing on the stage behind him who shouted at the president to stop deportations that split up families,"

"High rate of deportations continue under Obama despite Latino disapproval":

The facts don't matter to the Liar-in-Chief OR his clueless Obamabots.

Can't have it both ways pooh!!!!!!!!

Re: "Obama says he needs Congress to change the law to have that power (deportation).

The Liar-in-Chief doesn't seem to have a problem with executive orders regarding changing the ACA mandates and other laws that he doesn't like, why deportation?

Keep drinking the Kool-aide Obamabots. :)

Here's another one for the lying Campaigner-in-Chief -

"Obama Administration Proposes New Curbs on Campaigning by Tax-Exempt Groups"

Lookin' forward to Pres. Obama FINALLY seeing to it that the IRS cracks down on those black church get-out-the-vote campaigning events!
