OVI checkpoint stops 237; one charged

One person was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence when Ottawa County deputies and other law enforcement officers stopped 237 vehicles during a DUI checkpoint Saturday evening.

Sheriff’s deputies, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and Clay Township police operated the checkpoint at Bay Township Fire Station on West Fremont Road, diverting 31 vehicles that passed through for further investigation, but only charging one driver.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kent Davis said the checkpoint was a success.

“It was also obvious that through diligence in educating the public, more people are being responsible when going out and designating a sober driver,” he stated in a release.

237 stops, 1 charge. They should have been set up outside my church on Sunday morning.
